What's the TFP protocol for dead critters?

There really isn't one. At recommended levels (FC/CYA) chlorine will inactivate disease-causing bacteria, viruses, and protozoa at a 99+% rate within minutes. If it makes you feel more comfortable, raise to shock level, but I don;t see a need to maintain it there for 24 hours.

As long as the FC is below shock level for the CYA you are safe to swim, so bring it to shock, wait a little while an then pool could be open - your choice.

Personally, I would still swim in the elevated chlorine. It's perfectly safe up to shock level for your CYA. No doubt you'll find others that wouldn't raise their chlorine as long as it hadn't dropped below minimum for your CYA. After all, that is what it's there for, to kill contaminants.

I just get a bit creeped out when I see the dead rats, mice, moles etc. especially the one that got stuck on the weir door and visibally left scat on the floor below it. Ugh.

Cool! We are all grossed out so hoping to swim tomorrow only!

We had just finished SLAM and I was just getting used to adding just a 1/2 gallon at most a night and I stocked up for a week supply. All gone now.

Last spring we put up homemade bird feeders and baths, one of which is almost at ground level and just a couple of steps from the pool. It's a terracotta saucer, the kind you put under a flower pot:

Our house is two blocks from open farm land so we've had all sorts of critters in the yard, some of which ended up in the pool. My guess is they were falling into the pool trying to get a drink. After putting the bath out we've had a lot fewer dead things to deal with.

For every bird that dies of starvation there are two that die of thirst, so a properly maintained bath is a good thing. But you need to dump and replace the water every few days to keep it fresh, and to kill mosquito larva before they reach the adult stage.

This is all for nothing, if your FC is stable, then it has done its job. If there is a significant drop then bring it up. If it's zero, then slam because the bunny took out your chlorine. But if the CL did its job, then that's what it's there for. I mean how long was it in there? Of it didn't start to break down, then there's likely not a whole lot of bacteria from it, not so much that your FC couldn't handle.

But hey, if it makes you feel better to dump a bunch of $ in the form or chlorine then wait for it to burn off, then it's your call, just know you're shocking to make yourself feel better, not to sanitize.
