What is this?

I'll make that correction above in my post. Still, we know you have iron from the staining so the city water must have some old pipes or their local sources have iron in them.
Recall that I got massive staining because I went to Leslie and dumped in a whole bottle of algeacide and then metal out with very high chlorine . That was in June. Before I got all up in this.

The only thing I can imagine is that you have some very stout liquid chlorine.
I suggest you try another batch unless I am misunderstanding.
You are brushing after /while adding it correct?
What are the dimensions of your pool?

I think it's important to focus all effort on only one item right now - and that is successfully completing the SLAM Process. Discussing anything else is taking the focus off of what needs to be done first.

There seems to be some discrepancy with testing, adding the correct amount of chemicals or the potency of the chemicals you are adding - or possibly a combination of these.

In post #96, I asked for some info in the second paragraph.
"What was FC at your last test?
If you need to add, how much does PoolMath suggest?

If you add, test 30 minutes later and report the FC reading."

In post #97, you stated the last FC test showed FC 15. But didn't state how much PoolMath suggested to add to get back to SLAM level. You stated you only had one gallon of 12.5% chlorine left - but didn't add it then and didn't state how much the FC should rise with that one gallon addition. Finally, you didn't post an FC test result 30 minutes after you added that gallon of chlorine. Next time you add chlorine - let us know what the result was before adding, how much product you added and what the result is 30 minutes after adding (not 3 hours, not 1 hour - 30 minutes). Be sure the pump is running continuously.

My point is you need to help us to help you.
We need to figure out where the issue is with your additions and testing results showing a much higher reading than what would result from the quantity of chlorine you were supposed to add per PoolMath.

Being over 100 posts into the SLAM Process in this thread can make you frustrated since you aren't progessing. More so since you are experiencing some odd test results after chlorine additions that are still continuing.

Let's tackle this and get it taken care of.
Any other issues you may be having with the pool can wait.
SLAM on!!!

It’s finally ok. I wasn’t going elbow deep 😂I can’t believe that’s the reason but it seems to have made the difference

Are you saying that your FC test this morning was much more accurate or realistic because of that? I'm sure we talked about that before. Last night your FC was 17 right? This morning 22?

No last night 15 I added a gallon of 12.5 and waited an hour and it was 21 and this morning it was 21😁 no we never talked about elbow deep I was taking off the top but still- I was waiting 3 hrs - is that really the reason? I run the pump fo 24/7 and also still no visible algae. I can’t vacuum we are sick with Covid but hopefully it will now be ok letting chlorine fall to a cya of 60-50?
Maybe it was the ladder, I don’t know. Whatever it was I still have no visible signs of anything. What a relief.😅

Also I confess I did read the elbow thing way back but I didn’t do it I just sort of spaced that out

Not sure yet, we'll see. Let's watch that cautiously. It's great that your FC seemed to hold overnight and you had a reliable (expected) FC level. So with an FC of 21 holding overnight, that would indicate you passed the OCLT and basically completed the SLAM as well because I know your water was crystal clear. So unless your CC level was over 0.5, you are done.

Are you going to let the FC fall down now and resume normal operations? If so, you might consider starting a new thread about your staining. This thread is quite the monster. :)

Yes I will. I will retire this - I am still not savvy on navigating this site and threads etc.

Great. Once your FC falls down to 10 or below, be sure to test the pH and adjust as necessary. From there, keep the FC balanced to the new CYA as noted on the FC/CYA Levels.

For your staining, if you start a new thread let me know if I don't already see it and I'll merge some of the stain-related posts from this thread to the new one so you don't have to try and re-type everything from scratch.
