I’m at a vacation rental and noticed the underside of the hot tub cover in the center has a bunch of whitish goo on it. An area of about 18” square. I’ve never seen that in mine in 3 years. Does anyone know what it might be and what causes it? Maybe the chemicals?

Without knowing the history of that tub and a full set of chemical test results, it's anybody's guess. ?
Sounds like white water mold. It also sounds like you should take a photo and inform the owner. Oh, and stay out of the hot tub! That hot tub is not being properly maintained.
I know that the chems can damage the underside of the cover if not left open , and wondered if that was it, but I assume that would look like the material was disintegrating.
zea3- Yikes. The owner told me the service company is the only game in town. I brought my own test strips and everything checks out fine whenever I test except the sanitizer after we use it , and I have packets they left to add for cloudiness. ( or low bromine I think). It may be MPS. I can’t find ingredients but it says oxidizer and clarifier.
