What is this blotchy black stuff?

Hi everyone,

I've just finished SLAMing my pool for the 4th time this spring and cannot get the marks off the bottoms and sides.

The bottom just looks dirty. It is blotchy and black/gray. The sides have lines of yellow/green.

Nothing seems to get rid of them.

One note is that the CYA isn't very consistent which makes no sense to me. First it was zero and I added the prescribed amount to bring it to 3, but it went to 50. The next time it was 30 and today it is 20. We've only had a little rain almost none and I've had to add water.(approx 3 to 5 inches).

What test kit are you using? Add it to your signature.

If the stains/gunk don't brush off they are probably permanently embedded in your pool paint. Those stains may also be cause for your ongoing CYA and SLAM issues - they could contain algae or other stuff the SLAM didn't fully eradicate.

Are there any areas where the paint is peeling or in otherwise poor condition?
When was the last time the pool was painted and with what product? Pool paint isn't what is used to be (thanks EPA) and usually won't last more than a couple years.
