What was the weirdest or most unusual thing you found while excavating for your pool? Include pics if you have them.

We didn't dig our pool but during the rehab, we peeled back the liner and we found a Barred Tiger Salamander. We're in Kansas and upon some research these are super rare to find in their adult state as they are nocturnal and burrow into the ground for the moist soil/sand

So much sand that the pool builder paid me(!) for the sand he took away to use at other builds he was doing. He had a provision in our agreement that he could charge me if he needed to bring in extra sand - and as it turned out, my back yard was basically sand beneath a few inches of black dirt, and he paid me to use the excess sand!

Phone line. No pictures as it was dug before digital cameras existed...... LOL

As a note, the utility easement is out front but the phone company ran the wire from the front corner of the property all the way around the back of my property to the far side of the house to avoid going under the driveway...... DigTest did not locate it. I had a bit of a "discussion" and on-site visit with the phone company before they agreed to pay for it.

A piece of wood from an old fence post. Wife and I think it had to have been at least 25 years old. Our community was established I think in 1991. Before that this was cattle land/farm land. We think I had to have come from the period prior to the neighborhood being established.

Back in about 1965, my dad was running an excavation crew when an old wooden coffin popped up out of the ground they were excavating and dumped the skeleton out.. The land was an old old farm and the person had been buried for quite some time. I’m thinking Pioneer Times. Dad’s crew wasn’t digging a pool but I just had to share this true and spooky excavation story with ya since next week is Halloween!

Haha, we found all kind of goodies. We found numerous trash pits from the 40’s about 2 feet down...our home was built in ‘43 and trash service didn’t start hear in Long Beach until the 50’s. So, what did they do with the trash they couldn’t burn....they buried it. Found lots of glass Proteussus medicine bottles, broken dinnerware, china and a couple porcelain figurines. We also found a complete large dog skeleton. The kids thought that was so cool, it’s skull is now in their school science classroom, haha
