What did you do to your pool today?

poolnite.jpg

This is also the first time brushing my pool has ever really created a difference in the clarity of the water. There is definitely a lot of stuff floating around in there now. It's night and day compared to the clarity of the water in the spa.

So far today...nothing, just my daily subset of water tests. We took Friday off and today is day 3 of waking up, putting on the bathing suits and chillin' by the pool. I'll be taking the solar cover off in the next hour or so, setting the Polaris loose and then it's lather, rinse repeat...another beautiful sunny day enjoying our first season with with the new pool!

After a good brushing stirred up debris, I cleaned my DE filter yesterday in prep for a pool party tomorrow. I’ll bring FC up to 10 as the pool will probably see more activity than usual. Getting ready to smoke a couple of pork shoulders and fire up the Margaritaville machine! It’s gonna be a hot 4th in DFW - forecast of 102°. Glacier chiller has pool sitting at a refreshingly crisp 80°!

Digging a ditch. Have been without a filter since the 14th! Pool is crystal clear and still swimmable for humans only. My dogs trash the pool every time they swim.

Went outside this morning to test and add chlorine and I thought it was strange the pump wasn't running. Glance at the controller on the wall - says the pump should be on. That's not good. Walk over to the Aqualink panel and put it in service mode, relay clicks off. Press filter pump, relay clicks on, no pump. You can hear a buzzing noise. Weird, it was running just fine last night..

Pulled the pump basket out and verified I could spin the impeller with a screwdriver. Immediately suspected the cap. For once, Leslie's was useful, they had a cap in stock after I literally had to show the room temperature IQ person working there where they were. He was digging through the section with the Jandy valves telling me they don't seem to have one.. I'm not joking. I said "the part number is 38228, I see behind the counter here there's a bin labeled '38228', can you just go get that and we can see if that's it?" I never realized what sort of superior intellect is required to work at Leslie's. Are these really the people you trust to maintain your $100k investment?

Anyway, new cap got it running! Unfortunately it's definitely a very cheap, very low grade Chinesium part. I ordered a Amrad cap from Barnett and I'll replace it when I get it.

I learned my lesson with Leslie’s when i needed a simple pvc plug & a reagent refill. I was able to dig & find the plug myself, the reagent- forget about it! They had no clue.

Got a call from the wife right after noon. 8 calls actually. And a voicemail filled with expletives. And several texts. Apparently this was happening...

Apparently I need to take everyone out and show them the circuit breakers and inform them that if there is ever a situation like this again, they can just turn off the breakers.

Fortunately several months back, someone posted this same thing happening to them, and I had been looking at it and thought about that being a potential failure point, so I bought a replacement. For $26 it was worth having a spare on hand.

Got home from work, 10 minutes to change the valve and put the gauge back on it, and we are back in business.

Show them the main panel instead, which is clearly marked POOL. While they'd probably be ok, there is no good reason to flip the pad panel breakers while standing in a puddle. (y)

The issue with that is my dear wife shut off the feature circuits but wasn't aware of the pool circuit still being on. So the filter pump breaker was a much faster and easier shutoff. I can educate them all on the controls, but remembering that in an emergency situation can be tough.

I was thinking about how to wire up an E-stop, on the way home from work. Might be a future project.

So you need better labels for a 20 cent fix. :)
I wish it was that easy. Everything is labeled, but you have to get to the correct screen to turn it off. It's about education in this case. Pentair did a poor job with programming and there is not a single button press that will turn everything off. When nobody but myself ever controls the pool, they never learn what it's doing. Intellicenter is much different than the previous automation in that it has no external buttons to turn things on/off, they are all soft buttons that reside within the software. So unless you know what screen(s) to access to turn things off, it is not blatantly obvious what to do. I suppose I could post an instruction set inside the panel door, but who is gonna read that in an emergency?

I still think a big red button to kill everything is the way to go. I'm gonna work on that. Is gonna be a low priority project so it may be a while.

Those of you following along, who have the Intellicenter, make sure that someone other than yourselves know what needs to be turned off in the event of an emergency situation. I have shown everyone how to operate the individual features, but that doesn't help if you need to turn off everything.

I went back and watched the video from the security cameras. She and my son took turns standing there with their hand over it for the 14 minutes it took for me to finally look over and see my phone was ringing. Can't interrupt chow time!

Kill power to the whole equipment pad from the house panel, where its not flooding and/or being soaked. No need for a seperate kill switch.

Ah - makes me appreciate my 15 year old, real physical button automation…. My builder was pushing a dedicated wireless controller, but I insisted on a small wall panel. That wireless controller would have been out of date years ago.

Installed a new filter (old one was sand and leaking) and a SWG (IC-60). Waiting for a new pump to come in.

Luckily, the previous owner had disconnected the Perma-Salt system and was using liquid chlorine. He was actually a TFPer!

Nothing. But the heavens opened up and filling the pool and watering the lawn/garden for the first time in many months. My water bill for July was the second highest it has ever been and only exceeded by the time I filled the pool after new plaster 4 1/2 yrs ago. And that was in the late winter month when that was done. Between the pool evaraporation and lawn & garden needs (even with water restrictions in place) I am very thankful for the rain as we needed it very much. And the forecast for the week is to have 50% or greater chance of rain every day for the next week. Thank the Lord!!!

We came from vacation on July 2nd and haven't had any rain except for one day for about 15 mins. That's it and while we were gone for two weeks on the vacation, zippo. Neighborhood yards looked and still look like wheat fields they are so burned out. Our water bill was $800 for July trying to keep up.

I can relate. My July water bill was higher than my electric bill. I had to alter my chiller schedule to slow down the evaporation. But relief is in sight! We’ve had a little rain this past week, but quite a bit is forecast next week. That’s after going more than 60 days without a drop and 100°+ almost every day during that stretch.
