Water Temp Question

I'm new to the forum and only 2 years into pool ownership, so bare with me for this very stupid question. I'm in NC and we've had several warm days. I see lots of people mentioning opening the pool before water temp reaches 60 degrees due to algae growth. But, how do you know the water temp if the cover is still on?

Once I know it won't be icy again, I put a pool thermometer in the skimmer.

It stays there until I fire the heater up for the season (early may)

In your case if the skimmer is empty and the water below that just
use the string on the thermometer to put it in for a bit to get a reading.
