Vegas OB! Just got plans back and need some feedback (pics included :) )

Hi Will. I open in early May and don't heat until the third weekend in May. From that point on the heater goes on daily until probably mid June. Once heated I'd say a few hours per day as a total guess, but I don't really know. Certainly more in May then the 2nd week of June (normal temps). In May and June I'll see the $100 increase for the month but I start a lot of grilling then too. If I heated all of May it would probably be double that. I say that because my neighbor has their pool open ready to swim the first weekend in May and in the morning when I check my skimmers I can literally see the evaporation coming out of her pool. Looks cool but I always think to myself, it's like pennies rising into the air...lots and lots of them & they add up :) To give you an idea, our nighttime temps in early May average in the 40s (southern NY). By mid May through the month, the average low is 50 and climbs every few days. By mid June our average low is 60. I've tried the liquid solar blanket one year and I don't know if it works or not. A couple of points though...if I know we won't use the pool for a few days I may turn the heater down (if I remember which hardly happens) to 80. For example it's going to rain for a couple of days straight. If I had to guess I'd say the pool heats about a degree per hour when I'm going from 84 to 88. I really don't know if it changes when the water starts out at say 64 for example. My key indicator is how cold does it get at night. That's when I lose the most heat since I get full sun during the day. As an FYI, by me I found that when temps stay above 70 overnight my heat loss is hardly anything (especially when it's humid as my area can get). So if you get a blanket you'll learn your norm and when it's worth putting back on and when you can leave it off.

Also I don't know how much gas costs by you (I'm at .62 / CCF plus gov surcharges on top) but if yours is double of course it would be more to use. I looked at last year's bills (total gas charges). My March 25 to April 25 bill was $72 (didn't have pool open, but heat on at night in house). April 25 to May 23 was $45. May 23 to June 24 was $163 (lots of heating and grilling by then). June 24 to July 25 was $86. July 25 to August 25 was $49. Then August 25 to September 27 was $57. I remember that I didn't heat the pool all that much in September last year. I hope this helps a bit. The last thing you want is to get a whopping bill that's a ton more than you expected. I just remember thinking it was going to be $400 more to heat the pool per month and was relieved it wasn't close to that.

So quick update..... I came home on my lunch to see a cute little digger . Now they will trench my gas lines and get my project moving again. Will update more pics later when I get home to take them. One sad thing is this thing is SO tiny I can't fit in it [emoji22]

What's really amazing is how well those things work. When they did mine, the wife knew it would only take about a millisecond for the words "I want one!" to come drooling out of my mouth..;) Those look like a Tonka truck I used to have when I was a kid, and I would spend days digging up the back yard (and then filling the holes back in when my parents tripped over them..LOL)

Nectra I really appreciate the info and it is very helpful! My gas bill now is around $20-$30 dollars a month... so if I heat my pool and it stays under $150 I can see myself using my pool early in the season ( early march) and late into the season (November ). Once April may hits with our temps I'm sure the sun in Vegas will keep he pool plenty warm plus I'm going with a darker mini pebble which I hear keeps the water warmer :)

So so I think a mod is playing a evil trick on me because I was almost sure I update earlier today BEFORE IMAZ posted and was trying to get me in trouble AGAIN :uhh:. He is the bad kid in class who throws papers then blames it on the angel (me) sitting next to him . I know Mrs Kim wakes up before the sun comes out so I hope she sees who the true culprit is lol

so update: the wind in Vegas has been CRAZY!!!... so they did nothing hahahaha. Boulders have flew back into my dig and trenches have become baby plant holes with the dirt from the wind filling them back up. There has to be some clean up in my yard then the steel guys can start tomorrow afternoon provided we don't have 60mph winds again. But I promise even if they don't work I will take a picture of the rocks that were blown into my dig just as a update tomorrow.

on a side note I spent my evening after the gym trying to fix my drippers in the front yard. The wind blew some pipes off the house and my drippers wouldn't turn off, at first I thought it was the trenches that messed it up but it was this crazy wind

now until steel comes or the big rock gets out of the pool, I'm off to go help my fellow TFPers :super:

KIM!!!!!!!!

Will isn't updating!

Just got caught up on this thread. I really find it interesting to look at the dig photos from different locations and see how vastly different they all look. Will, really like your driveway and existing patio pavers. Will you be doing the same pavers for decking? Also, the stepped sitting area with bench by the spa is great. Def is going to look awesome once it is all finished.

I considered doing the pavers around the backyard since I do like them and already paid to have my patio done but I'm going with travertine (I did consider shell stone but I think travertine gives a more high end look). I'm actually going to rip up the brand new existing pavers and put travertine done so everything matches [emoji22]. They are only a few months old, but that's what happens when you have this forum and talk with others who are doing something similar ..... you find that money just keeps flying out of your pocket hahaha.
We are pretty excited about about the step up seating area and the bench we will have put in. I really considered nice furniture but for the price of some of the stuff we can have a nice bench with columns like the picture I posted on page 1 plus we will never have to replace that and I think it will add a lot of character to the back yard. Also we are going to put stacked stone on the face of the steps like singuy, I seen his steps and fell in love.
I love TFP but I think I need to put myself on a time restriction because the more I look the more I add lol

Will...it's much easier to dig the dirt and stuff out of the hole before it gets water and plaster in it!! My beautiful blue pond was brown this morning. I saw some reports that there were gusts reaching 77mph in our part of town, so there was some real estate moving around yesterday for sure. With half of California blowing over here, our property values are gonna have to have gone up..LOL.

Hahaha that's for sure Beach! I was going to edit my post because one report said winds were reported up to 84mph!!! CRAZY.
And I talked to a couple of my peers with pools and they said they had a MESS. So I couldn't agree more that just jumping in the hole with a shovel won't be to bad

Will, go look at your pumps for me.................are there unions or some way to remove them without cutting the pipe? Every piece of equipment should have a way to remove/replace without cutting.

Those are some  winds!

Nice to see the steel there! Means there is hope of something happening!

Not much room on the sides of your house noted. Please make plans for future Summer kitchen, ie electrical and water lines. A 100 amp sub panel should be enough. Also put in lots of electrical outlets in all 4 corners of your yard. Just my 2 cents worth
