New to forum. Bought a house this past fall with an in-ground pool (installed 2001-2002). Needs new equipment (filter/pump) and to be raised on a concrete slab (out of the sand/stone) and the pool company mentioned installing a UV system to minimize the use of chlorine. I have three young boys (4, 7, 9) and so less chemicals sounds appealing. Is it worth the extra cost? any maintenance issues? Just looking for some general feedback, thanks!

Congrats on the new house and welcome. Assuming the pool is not an indoor pool, UV systems are not needed since the sun does that for you for free. You will see lots of gimmicks like UV, Ozone, "Minerals", etc. being sold in the pool equipment world.

Here is some more reading on the matter. Have you considered a salt water pool? It still uses chlorine, but is easy to maintain and generally the water feels better. If you are getting new equipment, now would be the perfect time to add a salt water chlorine generator.

Nope, not indoor. Thanks for the article! Will read up.

Welcome to TFP.

An outdoor pool gets all the UV it needs for free from the sun.

You need to learn about the role of CYA in capturing most chlorine as reserve chlorine and leaving a small amount of chlorine as active chlorine to do the sanitation. With the TFP recommended level of CYA your pool water has a very low level of active chlorine.

B,

When most people think of chlorine pools, they think of the smell of a Public Pool... They think that "chlorine" is bad...

If you follow the TFP way, you will not even know that chlorine is in the water... We have no use for UV, OZone, or other magic potions that try and make you think that less chlorine is somehow better.. Just not true.

Save your money and learn how to care for your pool the TFP way..

Thanks,

Jim R.
