Understanding Differences Between TFP and Leslie’s Target Ranges

I recently purchased a house with a pool outside Houston, TX. The pool is 22,000 gallons with pebbletech.

Before having time to start learning I have been using Leslie’s to test my water and buying chemical to their recommendation.

I found TFP through Reddit and downloaded the app but when I put in the same pool details the suggested ranges are different and I want to double check I haven’t made any errors:

My pool:
22,000 gallons
Pebbletech surface
85f water temp

TFP
FC: 5.0 - 9.0
PH: 7.2 - 8.0
TA: 50 - 90
CYA: 30 - 60
CH: 250 - 650

Leslie’s
FC: 1.0 - 4.0
PH: 7.2 - 7.8
TA: 80 - 120
CYA: 30 - 100
CH: 200 - 400

TFP levels are tried, tested, and work. You will have variations based on your individual pool, and some levels are dependent upon your CYA, pool type, fill water, and type of chlorination.

How Clear is TFP Clear?
What about individual CYA pool readings? It seems that the generic FC 1.0 to 4.0 is very low. Even for my neck of the woods (AZ) for public pools and state regulations - they do not take in account CYA and they have very low outdoor pool FC levels. One thing I've noticed about pool company management (which I have discontinued thanks to TFP) - - they put the absolute minimum CL (Liquid Bleach Form) in as well as liberal use of stabilized Dichlor pucks. No wonder CYA levels go through the roof. But then again, the pool company management company I had did not test for CYA levels and mostly used the drop "Quick Test" method and then on to the next pool.

Hey MB and Welcome !!!!

FC: 5.0 - 9.0
I just want to touch on this as its so often misunderstood. If not by you, maybe it'll click for a lurker if i lay it out.

The range is the expected daily swing. The sun comes out everyday, even behind the clouds, and burns off chlorine. So you started at 9 and end at 5, ensuring you still have reserve FC in there when you dose before tomorrow's loss.

Sooooooooooo many people come tell us all happy like that they hit 7 and are mid range. It is not trying to happy medium it, at all. Its start high, fall, and land safe.

With record UV the last few years, hot climates like yours have seen 5ppm FC loss per day when its brutal out. Without multiple doses a day, its simply impossible to run the industry 1 - 4 , even further north where we peak at 4FC daily loss. But when people screw up, they get swamps and swamps sell chemicals. You do your own thinking on that one. :)

CYA levels will be dependent upon method of chlorination and climate. Chlorination levels are dependent upon CYA levels. Public pools have to adhere to public standards. Pool stores tend to follow the same guidelines to avoid any liability.

Whether that means it's right for your pool or not, correct? : > )

Yes - besides the "Daily Test," I check my Tucson, AZ pool every other day with the Chlorine Drop Test. Boy, can the sun and hot weather eat up CL levels. But I do have some significant shade on part of the pool and especially as the sun heads West. Sounds like you're an advocate for once a day, R-0870 testing. Which reminds me, I think I need to order more of everything!

P.S. - do I get any TFP points for laminating my TF Test Kit "Card?"

Until everyone learns how their pool behaves across the season. Then I'm cool when they come tell us they went by feel with occasional checks to make sure they're on course.

You DO. 2 points. Bravo.

Here's another quick reference that can be laminated
