I suspect that my 1-1/2 hp pump is too much for my 24" sand filter. I have an old 20" sand filter. Can I install a y shaped diverter and run both filters off of one pump.

There's no reason that you can't run two filters in parallel.
It probably wouldn't hurt to downsize the pump's impeller to reduce water velocity.

Parallel filters are not as common as they used to be, mostly only on comm'l installs these days. Still, nothing wrong with it. I'd put a Jandy 3-way valve before the filters, and after them, and keep the 1.5 HP you have.
