I had travertine 1.5" coping installed around my salt water pool in Feburary, 3 weeks after installation, cracks and holes started forming in the travertine and now 60% of the travertine has cracks and holes, is this normal? The pool contractor says yes. I live in San Diego, in ground salt water pool

Welcome to the forum!
That is not normal. That is an installation and / or a quality of material issue.
Saltwater in pools has little effect on stone. If the stone is of high quality, it will not have issues. Poor quality stone will have issues no matter the water that is impacting it.
I suggest you read ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry and consider reviewing the entire Pool School eBook.
