I'm having the same issue with flaking and cracking travertine pavers and it's been a 4 month nightmare. Everyday I notice small chunks or flakes (disintegration) around the pool deck. They are also cracking most likely because the compaction wasn't done correctly. The Contractor repeatedly says that travertine is an imperfect stone and the chipped corners/edges and flaking is completely normal. Aaargh!!! They did replace about 20 pavers last week and used PLAY SAND as the base and didn't compact it. Is there any solution to this or are they simply defective?

Welcome to TFP.
Unfortunately nothing is going to improve the quality of the stone you got.

There are different grades of Travertine with different quality from various sources at different price points. Travertine can come from Turkey, Italy, or domestic quarries. In the future you need to better understand the material you are buying.

How thick are the pavers? Mine are 1.25” thick. Even if they are not set right they should not crack. Flaking is another issue.

A solution you might consider is having them grouted. I had it done about 2 years ago. For the most part it is holding up pretty well and I am very happy with the result. There are some sections that I have gone back to fix, but just did that myself.

Here is my thread on the topic.
