You are lucky. Took me a month and over $1000 dollars before I figured it out. It's a racket, prove me wrong.

The sold me a $1000 UV Filter. I learned here that you only need a UV filter for INDOOR POOLS!!!!!

I fixed my pool with the help here. I ripped out my puck chlorinator myself. I ripped out the UV myself. I installed a chlorinator that is automated, myself. SWG is great and it is a super solution, and you will get plenty of help here. In a short period of time, you will have control of your pool, on your terms, with very little hassle. I spend <5 minutes a day and have a crystal clear pool and I understand exactly what is going on.

Stay here and it will save you a bunch of time and money. These folks are super smart. They have no vested interest. They are a 503c. See any ads here? Nope, the people that have been saved from the pool store contribute. I took some of the 100s of $$ I saved and became a supporter. Become a TFP Supporter

It is also why you are getting so much help. I love my pool and I love TFP. I got so much benefit, I want to share what we have learned with others and give something back to TFP.

Also, we recommend that you don't use pool store testing. It is inconsistent and many times inaccurate. You can read the right test kits to get here -->Test Kits Compared Evaluate them, then get one.

Also, we have Pool Math (app for your phone). You can enter all your test results and it will make specific recommendations! --> PoolMath

As for you MA addition, to give you an idea of the impact of a gallon, we need to be more specific with the MA. is it 20 degree BAUME acid...or is it 20% muriatic (I'm guessing 20%). Can you tell from the jug?

I posted a pic of the jug. Ugh it does say 31%. Last night I only saw the 20%. I’m going to buy a test kit today. My strips now say I’m finally making chlorine, the PH and alkalinity are in good range but now the CYA is low. I don’t live close to any pool stores so I want to grab everything I may need while I am there. What do you think I need on hand when I’m testing myself?

My strips now say I’m finally making chlorine, the PH and alkalinity are in good range but now the CYA is low. I don’t live close to any pool stores so I want to grab everything I may need while I am there. What do you think I need on hand when I’m testing myself?

Not a big deal on the % difference. I think you’ll be just fine based on the numbers below. I would probably continue to aerate the water a bit today (run water features if you have them, or you can point returns up toward the surface so that they’d shoot out a little, or a cannonball contest helps, too…) just in case that TA number is off.

regarding test kit - sometimes you can find a Taylor K2006 at a pool store. It is the same as the 2006c but just doesn’t have as much reagent. Not a big deal as you are late in the season anyway. Don’t buy anything other than that or the TF-100, as those are the ones proven to be reliable and also use the more sophisticated CL test.

as for what to have on hand, I just keep MA, a few jugs of liquid chlorine for dosing before big parties, some CYA (I get it from Amazon) and I like to keep an extra bag of salt around to add as needed due to splash-out salt loss. That’s it!

I am stepping in here to say WELL DONE to everyone! The OP and the people who stepped in to help them out! Look at all of the time stamps! In less than an hour there were SO many wonderful, helpful replies! THANKS everyone!!!

You can buy most of what you need at Walmart, Target, Lowes, Home Depot, etc. You do not need or want to buy it at a pool $tore as they over charge for everything!

My shopping list for you is here:
-2 2cup plastic measuring cups-one is for the muraiatic only, the other is for all other chemicals.
-1 catsup or mustard squirt bottle for collecting water and squirting it into the test tubes in your test kit
-1 white plastic plate to hold up behind the pH test. I found this really helped me compare the colors and match them

Look around your area to find a good source of liquid chlorine. Everyone once in a while you might need some since you do have a SWG which can take care of the day to day needs.

Yep. I learned quickly to READ THE LABEL before buying anything...and READ THE LABEL again before putting it in your pool.

It is HIGHLY likely that the pool store DOES NOT have the proper test kit. If they don't have it don't buy it. Get it online. Even if it takes a few days.

Only thing I would add to your shopping list is the CYA.

Also, I wouldn't make any drastic adds to the pool until you get a proper test kit!

Final note. Get the speed stir--> Speed Stir. Might seem expensive, but my results are super consistent.
