Hi everyone, so it’s my first year opening the pool in April since following all your wonderful advice last year. I’m in a northern Chicago suburb, and I’m wondering if I can take the cover off and leave it off for a bit before I actually start the pump and start balancing it? We need a part for the filter but I didn’t know if you could take the cover off without hooking it up to the pump right away when you open it. Thank you!

I'd recognize my fav shark ANYWHERE !!!!!

Welcome back too, Jenny !!!

If you expose the pool to the sun, then it will burn off FC like it's open. It will be less now than in July, but still. You can uncover and then test/add and brush it around real good, or just make sure there is some FC in there occasionally under the cover until you're ready.

If you open, you'll want to stir it up as best you can before you run your daily test.

Thank you new dude! My favorite shark needs a new fin, she’s outgrown her baby one! I’ll have to update my photo
So the pool water temperature is about 47°, do you think it’s too early to open it? There’s a couple nights next week that it looks like it’s going down to about 32 at night. Is this too soon?

There are people who leave it open all year so it is never too early to open. Now if you are done with the pollen and such then go ahead and open the pool so you can enjoy looking at it and doggy shark can swim!!

Just make sure you can mix the chlorine in good.

I can see the sheepdog like it was yesterday. 😁. I can look someone dead in the eyes as they tell me their name and it doesn't register. Their dog I will recall decades later, as it should be.
Ooh so true! Same if I meet someone with their dog; dog’s name I remember! Owner’s name……..🤔🤔
Yesterday…..Disney! Yellow lab/Great Pyrenees mix. Owner………um….😯

So I do have one more pool question. Would a couple nights of high 20° temperature damage the filter if it was hooked up ? Do I have to wait to hook up the filter until we’re completely out of any possible freezing temps at night even if it’s a day or two?

Welp. That gets tricky. I would set it all up but not run water through it yet. 28 degrees will take longer to cause damage than the time it stays cold this time of year for most. But if it's windy, the wind chill can rapidly cool everything to the cold temp. It will never go below the actual temp, but you can get there 12 hours faster than it would have on its own and lose your time advantage.

I am a little south of you and was going to open this week but putting it off till after Easter
I don’t think anything is gained opening now with cold weather on the horizon
Water temps are still in mid 40s
I normally open mid April till first week of May
