Hello,

First time pool owner on a new-to-us home, and already I'm tired of pouring chlorine daily into the pool. Very certain that I want to get a SWG and am looking for advice on how best to install it in my limited equipment space. I'm thinking of removing the existing inline feeder to get some space to install SWG (and its flow sensor) vertically. Planning on the CircuPool Edge40. Below are some notes, hoping you experts here can do a sanity check for me:
  • There's only 19.5" of horizontal space before the return, and this space is occupied by 1) a tee that goes to a Polaris PB4-60 Booster Pump, and 2) Pentair 320 inline feederIMG_1144.jpeg
  • I don't use the vacuum-type pool cleaner, but I don't really want to remove this
  • I don't use the inline feeder, so planning to cut it out to make space
  • In the space where the inline feeder used to be, make a vertical U for the SWG. See picture
  • SWG plan.jpeg
  • Current control system is a Pentair EasyTouch PL4/PSL4, haven't opened this up yet but assuming I can wire the SWG into the load side
  • Not sure yet how to cut out the coupler area after the pump tee to give me a place to connect an elbow. Are there elbows that could go right over the coupler?

So, do y'all think this plan is doable?

Sir,

Why not put the cell in the line between the heater and your Return valve?? Then it could be used for both the spa and the pool??

No matter what, I'd remove the tab feeder..

Your idea to mount vertically also works..

Even if you don't want to remove the booster pump, I'd still disconnect the pump and just plug the lines.. You could then reconnect it if needed..

Thanks,

Jim R.

This ^ is why I love this forum. There's 21" of straight pipe in this area, so I'll have to see what the dimensions of the flow switch are as the CircuPool Edge40 says there should be 6"-12" of straight pipe before the flow switch, but it just might fit here!

This is a good idea. Would you happen to know the thread size on the "quick connect fittings" on a Polaris PB40 (manual doesn't specify)?

Sir,

Sorry, no a don't..

Keep in mind that the check valve in the heater line, is needed if you have a tab feeder, but is not needed if you have a SWCG.. That might give you a little more room.

When I initially read your post I 'thought' you were going to install an IntelliChlor IC40.. Since you have a Pentair automation system.. The EasyTouch can reduce the FC created when in the spa mode... Now I realize that you are installing Edge-40, the EasyTouch will not be able to control the SWCG.. Not a big deal, but something to keep in mind, if you stay in the spa mode for long periods of time..

Thanks,

Jim R.

Closing the loop (har har). I installed the SWG on Saturday, and it's been running for 2 days now w/o leaks. For me, it was a pretty daunting project (never having solvent welded PVC pipe before), but the TFP community gave me the confidence to try it. Ended up leaving the existing inline feeder in place (didn't want to deal with cutting off the existing coupler) but I did plug up and remove the booster pump. The SWG was installed right before a check valve and the flow sensor around the bend upstream of it.

Thanks @Jimrahbe for your helpful suggestions!
