Thoughts on my pool equipment install

How is your iChlor SWG wired to prevent operation when your pump is off?

The iChlor Installation Manual says:

CHLORINE GAS BUILDUP CAN OCCUR WITH IMPROPER WIRING: To reduce the risk of personal injury the iChlor SCG Power Center must be installed on an automation filter pump relay wired to the load side of the time clock, electronically controlled switch, or relay load side, so that it will receive power only when the pool pump is on. Otherwise, dangerous chlorine gas buildup can occur. The iChlor SCG should never be energized when the pool pump is OFF and water is not flowing through the unit.

The pad isn't even powered yet. I'll ask. Thank you!

Should I have an intelliflo pump instead of a superflo?
If you had an IntelliFlo pump you can use the Smart Sense feature on the iChlor and no additional relays or timers would be required to ensure the SWG does not operate when the pump is off.

The IntelliFlo pump is also compatible with the IntelliConnect automation system.

A 3HP VS pump will be more energy efficient and quieter then your 1.5HP Superflo when run at the same flow rates.

So now I'm on TFP getting the advice I should have gotten from the guy who's selling the equipment
Trust. Me. Many don't know squat and would have filled your head with all kinds of half truths or industry misconceptions / outdated thoughts.

You're better off having lots of ammo going into the eventual convo with them.

My main issue with this process is that the equipment guy never consulted me on what I wanted. So now I'm on TFP getting the advice I should have gotten from the guy who's selling the equipment. But everybody here has been really helpful!! I want to support TFP!
We appreciate your support.

Unfortunately the equipment guy probably does not know half of this stuff and never read the manuals.

And your installer did not follow the Installation Manuals.

Such is the state of pool builders who build pools that work on day1 so they can collect their check and don’t care about ongoing maintenance.

is there a place on TFP where I can look at the difference in price between these two pump lines?
If I insist on an Intelliflo I'm sure there will be a price bump I just don't want to know what it is so I'm not surprised or overcharged. Make sense?

$1100 vs. $1700.

My sense is that the pool builder is a decent guy trying to do a good job but he's sold a lot of pools so he's overworked it's been raining for 3 weeks so he's behind and in scramble mode and the ball was dropped. My sense of the equipment guy is he has a standard lowball package and that's what I got. I'll get it sorted out and the information I'm getting here is incredibly helpful.

I had a PB excitedly tell me how he was going to cut every corner to make the price so attractive that I'd have to use them. I asked him that if he was being that upfront cutting corners that I knew about, how many was he cutting that I wouldn't find out until it was too late ? Then I promptly hung up.

The guy I used twice was awsome. For the original build he had great subs and it was a no brainer to use him again. The 2nd round was disastrous due to terrible subs. He was awsome about fixing the issues, but I was down there demanding 2nd / 3rd / 4th visits at every step.

Sometimes the stars line up and you get someone knowledgeable and/or not overworked. There are good people out there, but we see more of the iffy ones than the great ones.

Preferably you would have found us from scratch, but you still found us just in the nick of time, so there is that.

I see that. Thank you! I'm not putting in the pool at Caesar's Palace, just a fiberglass pool in my backyard.
Is it worth spending the additional money? At this point, I don't care that much about the $700. On the other hand, I don't want to buy something I don't necessarily need.
I think my pool holds about 20,000 gallons so a 1.5 HP pump should be okay based on what I know.
I'd like to be able to program the pump and turn on the lights and bubblers from my phone. So the question becomes what's the best most affordable (not cheapest) way to get to that point? Make sense? I'm very interested in anyone's input. As I said, I'm brand new at this.

I completely understand. I interviewed five pool builders. I told each of them " I know this is expensive and messy and I'm prepared for that. What I don't want, is to stand in my backyard that's been turned into a mud hole and argue with you!" so far, my pool builder been fine the only real issue has been I wasn't consulted or educated about the pool equipment. So now I'm in TFP school.

Both pumps can push water.

As I explained the IntelliFo is more energy efficient, quieter, and more compatible with other Pentair equipment and your iChlor SWG.

Depends if those things matter to you.

They are. Intelliflo it is. With a 20,000-gallon pool what size filter should I have? My Builder really pushed sand but I went with cartridge. Was it a mistake?

Following along your thread and I wonder about you needing automation. I don't have any automation, except an Intermatic timer to handle my pump and SWG run times. I have a switch at my pad to turn on/off the lights, and when I want to run my bubblers, I manually turn my Jandy valves. We have hardly used our pool light, as I find it just attracts bugs. And, our bubblers aren't used that often either.

Maybe ask yourself if you just want the cool looking app to turn on your lights and bubblers, or would the $ saved be better suited elsewhere?
