Thinking of having Blue Haven install a gunite pool

Flow rate will be determined by either your swg or your heater. For normal circulation, the goal is to run your pump at as low speed as your components will allow to save energy. In general, doubling pump speed requires 7 to 8 times more energy.

A larger swg will require the same flow rate as a smaller swg. But, a larger swg will produce more chlorine at any given time, meaning you can cut down on pump run times if you desire.

Correct no spa. So the SWG will determine the needed flow rate, correct? If so, will a larger salt cell mean I can have a slower flow rate? I believe that would mean less energy usage too.

No, SWG cell size does not change the flow rate required. SWG cell is happy at a fairly low flow rate. If you have a heater it will require more flow rate then the SWG.

So the size of the salt cell doesn't affect flow rate -- thanks! I guess some brands have different minimum flow rates than others? I thought pools always had to run their pumps (at some level) 24/7 but it sounds like that isn't the case.

Thanks for the education guys!

And this one too?

Am I correct in thinking the following is something else that I don't need?
And this one too?
Both gimmicks and unnecessary. Minerals can add metals to your pool that can lead to staining.

So it looks like we are going to settle on two water features. One is a lighted bubbler and the other is a 18" lighted waterfall. Our main pump is a 1.85 VS pump (Hayward TriStar I believe) and he said he has to add another pump (a 1HP model) because of the water features. I asked if both features would run off the additional pump, and he said no -- so we could control each each independently. Does that make sense to people here?

Need specifics on the model bubbler and waterfall being used and the expected throw and GPM required.

You going to have a heater? What type and model?

A 1.85 HP VS pump with 1/5" & 2" lines probably can not provide enough flow to run a heater and water features at the same time. If you go to a 2.7HP VS pump and larger pipes you may be able to.

You are correct (and sorry) but we are still hammering out details. That said, we are getting close now -- we put a deposit down so we're pretty committed at this point! :) I believe many things will get firmed soon, then I will try to give a complete picture.

December has been crazy for us, but I finally have time to post the details that I have about the Blue Haven pool we are hashing out the details on:

I did add specific model numbers where I could above. Do note that I plan to nix the Smart Guard item listed above (which from all my reading seems like snake oil) and will instead spend that money on a pool auto-fill system. I look forward to any comments or questions anyone has. I am a first time pool builder so any help I can get will be appreciated! Thanks to all who have helped so far -- especially ajw22.

Not necessary. A 10 cent hair net over your skimmer basket will work better.
I'm going to go waaaaay out on a limb here and reply to this. I have zero experience with pools having never owned one but we're moving into a house next week that has a pool with a MultiCyclone 50. I had never seen one before (along with most of the other pool equipment) so I did a bunch of research to learn more about them. It's a very clever design that is super easy to clean out. You literally open a valve for a minute or two then close it.

From all the videos I've watched, the MultiCyclone appears to catch smaller and heavier objects in the water like sand. You can clearly see this stuff at the bottom of the clear "catch bowl". Not only is this material not going to end up in the main cartridge filter which is what it's designed to do but I don't think a hair net would catch sand. In fact, the pool we're getting has a net over the skimmer basket but there is still some sand in the MultiCyclone so at least in our case, the MultiCyclone IS catching stuff the net in the basket isn't. I figure anything that ends up in the MultiCyclone is something that won't end up in the main filter and that's a very good thing - especially when you consider how easy it is to clean the MultiCyclone and how time consuming it is to clean the main cartridge filter.

You guys are welcome to flame me because as I said, I have zero personal experience with any pool equipment. But I have watched many hours of Youtube videos and I actually did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last month :)

I am sure the pre filter will catch debris. But the function of it requires a higher pump rate, which equates to more electricity consumed. And at the end of the day, the two things that will actually keep your pool the cleanest, is the chemistry and a robot.

So the pre-filter needs to water running at some minimum speed and won't do much when the pump is running slower which ideally would be the case most of the time -- correct?

According to the specs, it requires 13gpm minimum to operate. Max is 130gpm.
