The husband finally let me take over and I don't want to blow it!!

If your bottom drains just have a grate on them, you should be able to see of there's any crud in there. If you have the type of cover that has a slot all around, find a brush that you can just stick in there. Even if you are doing it without be able to see, it should do a pretty good job on it.

Definitely. TW always knows when I'm on TFP and she definitely talks to me more when I'm checking TFP. She jokes with me to stop talking to my online girlfriends and "bros" and try talking to her :) I let her know that she has nothing to worry about as my one, true love is the pool....that gets her steamed and makes for some good laughter. I tell her all the time that if she wants to take on the pool care, she can have all the TFP "boyfriends" she wants....we both laugh about it and are good-sports so it's all in good fun.

Of course, now that she knows that my pool skills are not some form of voodoo wizardry that I have developed and nothing more than becoming a TFP member, she reminds me that I can be replaced with a younger, more-buff pool boy at anytime ;)

I'm with you on the 8' deep and being down near the drains. I might be a little freaked out. Your pool looks great!!!

There's no basket, just a large opening about the size of a cereal bowl but a little deeper. One of you could put on a mask & do a swim-by. If all you see is white then you don't need to do anything. If it's dark then cleaning could help you pass the OCLT. Mine just had two screws holding on the cover. Make sure the filter is off! I've heard some real horror stories about bottom drains although I believe they involved large commercial pools.

Ok, so I reported your post to TH, his reply was, "so now you want me to be a Navy Seal?? That new life insurance policy you made me take out wouldn't have anything to do with this would it?"
But, he did go on to say he might rent a scuba outfit (are you crying laughing yet?) or figure out a long breathing tube from his snorkel mask (I'm not kidding).

Interesting test results tonight. FC stayed the same all day. Then, for the first time, the water in the test cylinder did not turn pink when I added the R-0003 (I guess that indicates no CC?) I put a drop of R-0871 just for yuks and no change so I guess the CC was 0? Didn't add any Clorox, will check in the morning to see if I pass the OCLT. PLeeeeeease
Also, found more leaves in the pump room basket so I cleaned it out and lo and behold the psi went up to 17 (from 15). What the heck?

Thank you and thank you Cowboy Casey for the compliments!!

Turn the valve on the top of the filter that the pressure gauge is sitting on. Open that when the pump is running and it will blow out air for a bit and then water. Once it is water close the valve again.

Ah yes, pabeader told me about that earlier, and yes I did "vent the air out" (didn't know the lingo, now I do).

The weirdest thing, the more I clean the filters, baskets, pump basket, the higher the clean psi goes. Why would that happen?

Any cleaning between skimmers/drains and pump will increase pressure because it allows water to make into to the pump easier.

Any cleaning between pump and return jets will decrease pressure because it allows water out of the pump faster.

It sounds like, for whatever reason, your intake flow is better in proportion to the output flow compared to what it used to be.

Wow, thanks for that info. Makes sense, now i understand why the more I clean the higher my psi goes even though I thought it should go the other way.
So now I'm worried about the output flow. Do you think its a case that the psi should have been 15 but because of the debris that was in the skimmers/drains it was at 10 (then dropped to 5 when air got in the filter)? Or do you think something is impeding the output flow? if the latter, how would I check for proper output flow? (The water pressure has markedly improved on all the returns)

On another matter, I was looking for info on hot tub/spas (new project for TH) and I came accross a post by Go_Habs_Go. She is having a fit about high CH (489, vinyl lined pool) but her thread started out with her concern about grey dirt coating the bottom of the pool. She seems a bit obsessed with the CH, but is that such a big problem? (My CH is out of this world, 675, but I think I remember someone saying it was ok for now, finish SLAM first. After reading her thread, I think the problem is she's not "sold" on the TFP method and keeps going to the pool store to have her water tested (didn't see CYA) and seems to ignore the advise a TFP member is giving her. I want to tell her to trust the advise she's getting and COMMIT to the TFP method ALONE, not getting TFP advise then going to the pool store and following their advise, get her own test kit (she's been going to the pool store cuz she's in Canada and can't get the kit there. Heck, I'll send her one) but I hate to chime in cuz I'm a rookie (don't wanna give wrong advise), could someone take a look over there?

I am dying to know, did you pass :) I think you are really close and with 0 CC in a day that is exactly what we have been waiting for...

AWESOME, I was away from my computer and just saw your post... It will not hurt to keep the level up 1 more night

YAY YAY YAY :)

You can help her out just by telling your story and what you have done :) You are well on your way to be able to help with pools, look at me, I still do not have a pool :) (today it's suppose to be installed)

I promise everyone on here does not know everything, we help where we can...

I gave it a look. Unfortunately the TF 100 is not available in Canada, but she has access to the Taylor K2006, but they are very expensive there. She knows she needs a good kit. Calcium is a problem but not the main problem.

In your case, once the slam is complete you can lower the pH to control the calcium and prevent related problems. We will get into that when the slam is completed.

LOL at TH! Poor thing! He must roll his eyes any time you get near the computer now! "What is she going to learn or ask me to do now??" LOL

Can you post a link to the thread you are talking about OR you can post a link to YOUR thread on hers to show her all that you have done.

Kim

Thank you for looking. Did you comment? I'm at work and cannot check her thread

Congratulations on passing the OCLT...you have put in a bunch of hard work!

Thank you, yes I have but all worth it. Tonight's the night!!

Normal pressure varies. Your pressure increasing after cleaning the skimmer and drain is expected. Pressure dropping due to air is ok but should be fixed, which it is. I cannot say if anything is stuck in your return but I do not suspect anything is.
