The husband finally let me take over and I don't want to blow it!!

Yup, that's it. it's called your pump filter and basket. Still looks like crud in there. Glad you are cleaning that out periodically. Can you get a picture to the right? Looking for shut-off valves of some sort.

It still looks dirty in there. There is a basket inside like a colander. Are the "holes" clear so that water can flow through it?

Yes, its a bad picture, and actually the glass top is dirty. I'll try to wipe it off and take another pic. To answer your question, yes, the holes are very clear, the water was flying through there after we cleaned it.

Thanks for the extra picture of your pump basket. I was hoping that that was where you might have impeded flow. (Easy fix)

Anyway, it looks like those two blue valves control your (1) main drains and (2) your skimmers. You can easily figure out which is which by closing one and seeing if your skimmer stops. Then label them with a sharpie.

Both of them are open. You know that because the blue handles align with your flow.

Have you checked for air in your filter? I have the same model just different size filters. You turn the gauge base CCW towards OPEN position. If there is any trapped air, it gets released out of the small hole in the side of the base. Then water squirts out, so be ready to twist it back around. I have a small leak in my inlet o-ring and if I don't release the air once in a while, I will start to show lower PSI and bubbles from the returns.

You are doing so great... I think you did not pass your OCLT because of the light but it should bounce back fast..

does your return have less pressure? Maybe with the light and gunk you found the cart's got clogged and your seeing less return.. That would also leed me to believe you pressure gauge may be going bad? could be air also, check that filter out... :)

On to your staines and a question for everyone following.. If it is calcium staining, is there a way to find out for sure?

pabeader you are my hero!!! Praise the Lord, I did what you said, there was a big burp (but no water), and when I turned it back on 10 PSI!!! TH is still sleeping so I'll go recheck it before I tell him the good news! Thank you so so much :super:!!

TH is up and said he tried that yesterday, water and air came out but psi stayed at 5. Oh well, I learned something new and its still at 10, I just checked.
But the water pressure from the return is weak in some of the outlets. Does it take time for the water pressure to "make the round" of the pool?

BTW failed OCLT last night. FC was ok, lost only .5 but CC was 1.5! Could it be because I used the SS brush to sweep the entire and I mean entire pool out yesterday after I read the "how to on black algae" section? Probably, huh, especially since the pump was off.

There is a product on the market called Jack's Magic Stain ID Kit that has a test in it for scale. I think it's the #2 test (The Cu & Scale Stuff). You could use that kit to try to get a more definitive diagnosis of the stain.

Like others have said, it looks an awful lot like calcium scale.

Will testing the water for metals help ID the stain?

It's always good to get an idea of what's in the water. However, it's not a "smoking gun". You can have metals in your water and not get staining. What controls precipitation of dissolved metals in your water is your water chemistry balance.

I would bring that sample to the pool store and let them give you an analysis just so you know. Since you already did the trichlor puck and vitamin C test with negative results, then I strongly suspect calcium scale or plaster etching from corrosive water.

I am with Casey on checking out the filter.

You NEED to brush your pool. Yes it might cloud it up a bit and lower the pressure some BUT that means it is a good thing to do.

My husband's only job with the pool is swim and brush the walls. He got lazy one time and I noticed that the water was not as jewel like as I was used to. I asked him if he had brushed the walls at all that week "They look good to me". Hummmmmmm...............I made him come outside to the pool with me. I grabbed the brush and gave it a short push on the wall. Wellllllllllll imagine that.....there was a cloud of "stuff" that came off the wall!

He jumped in (fully clothed) and brushed the walls!!!! LOL SO brushing needs to be done!

If it's etching of the surface, there isn't anything you can do. Calcium scale buildup can be reduced and even eliminated, over time just by very careful controlling the CSI levels in the water chemistry.
