Thanks a lot! I appreciate that. Next question: I don't understand how I lower pH without losing my total alkalinity number in a few days when the pool gets aerated by bather load...does that question make sense?

The question makes sense.
What is your pH and what pH value are you trying to maintain?
What is your current TA.

If your TA is between 60-80, stop forcing pH down. It will settle about 7.8-8.0, which is just fine.

Ok. Well I'm at 80-90 and ph shown in pic. Would you call that an 8?

There is no ish. Do the test. Drop drops until the color no longer changes and subtract that drop.

Take a thumb from each hand and block off above and below a #. Yes/no is way easier than best of 3.

For example :

A little more purple than 7.8

Not quite as purple as 8.2

If you dose a couple days early, your punishment is that next time comes sooner too. If you dose a couple days late, PH is a long term concern and I assure you the price of beer will remain unchanged.

When you're in between #s like above, just call it somewhere in the middle and act or not, accordingly. :)

Thank you for explaining that. Makes sense.

Then again, why I said it that way is sometimes I get an 8(0) and sometimes I get a 9(0). Why is that?
For TA ?

Drop size is rarely perfectly perfect.

Or it's between the two and both are technically correct.

Or its the accepted test variance of +/- 1 drop.

Not to be a wiseguy, but having earlier denied the existence of ish, I believe you just described the parameters of ish in your reply *supra* . :) And now it all makes more sense. Now I can manage the "ishnesses" in my mind. So thank you for being patient with me in the end lol. :)

You stated your TA was 80-90. On TESTING, there should be no ish. either it is 80 or it is 90. When the color stops changing, subtract that drop and that is your TA.

Ranges for TA of 60-80 is not ish. It is just a range.
