TF test kits PH meter, XL option for new build question

Looking to get some feedback on the ph meter from tf test kits. I have a TF100, my brother in law needs a good test kit so I plan to give him my kit and get a new one. I am close to construction on my first in-ground build, it will be 4-5 times the volume of the pool I have previously maintained.

1. Is the PH meter worth it? I have always struggled with color comparisons, so I would love a meter if they are accurate.
2. Speedstir, I think is a no brainer. I will be getting one of these.
3. XL option? Do I need XL option for a brand new opening, I am confident in my ability to get the chemistry right once the contractor turns the pool over to me but I am nervous about the condition of the water at that time.

Thanks in advance.

Some like the pH meter. Some get frustrated with it as you do need to calibrate it, often. I find the pH color comparison is easier using 4 drops of reagent, with a plain white background, in natural light.

The XL option should not be needed unless you need to SLAM, which with a new fill, we certainly hope that does not happen!

Thank you mknauss.

I currently use our white vinyl fence as a background. I usually look at it and say 7.6 and then ask my wife and she says says 8.0. It is frustrating.

Given my location and the shorter swimming season, if I calibrated the PH meter at opening would I need to calibrate again before closing? Our swimming season is probably late May - early October at best. Basically, 5 months. On the site, they claim that it needs to be calibrated every 5 months. IF that is the case, I would probably get one.

I'm probably splitting hairs, it's not like it is expensive.

You will need to calibrate the pH meter far more than that. There are threads on the forum about it.

Spring for the XL now. You may get so TFP-OCD that you'll burn through all the reagent too fast. I live in Swimmingpoolland and none of the local pool stores have FAS-DPD refills. I've only seen a K-2006 in stock once. Granted that was several years ago, but still... SoCal is probably more fertile ground than Nebraska for pool supplies.
