I couldn’t get a replacement cap until Tuesday morning.
There are plenty of places that sell capacitors.

If they are like mine and used the old " freon" ( can't remember the numbers ) you due for a replacement. The old stuff cost more then gold

Yup. Good old R-22 ozone depleting refrigerant … probably causes cancer too and is toxic to all forms aquatic life … good stuff!! Costs around $100’ish per pound to top off. Most HVAC guys can get it on the supply market for around $60-$80 per pound.

My AC would need around 14 pounds to fill up … so yeah, not doing that if it ever springs a leak

Just replaced one that lasted 21 years. The govt is fixing to make us change freon again after the one I just bought. Ain't exactly like I could wait. Those newer units are gonna be bongo bucks too. Can't win
R-14A is current one I think.

Yeah. I’d like to get these units through this summer and then have them serviced/tuned up next spring and see what my HVAC guy says. In the mean time, I’ll be educating myself on the latest and greatest in the HVAC world. One of my neighbors recently did one of their entire units (air handler, furnace, evap coil and compressor) with a Bosch unit and it put them back about $9k. But the unit is 3.5 ton, 18 SEER and the compressor is physically half the size of the older Goodman unit they have. The Bosch has all the variable speed stuff on it along with an electronic expansion valve and what appears to be a microcomputer (control board) built into the outdoor unit. They had to change out the control board twice because lightening kept frying it. They finally put a surge suppressor on the power line to it and it’s been happy ever since.

Not looking forward to spending that kind of money but it’s kind of necessity.

If I remember I spent $16k on 2 units. Think main was a 3 ton and upstairs a 2.5. Wasn’t what I expected when it died but was 16 years old.

Tons of Ice equivalent … 🙄
Well, that's just silly.

They might as well use any unit of energy like:

Cords of firewood.

Llamas - The kinetic energy of a llama running at 23 mph.

Suns - The amount of energy that the sun generates in 1 picosecond.

Dynamites - 3 sticks of dynamite.

McDonald's coffee - The heat in a small McDonald's coffee.

Tornadoes - The amount of energy in a standard tornado.

How much horsepower does your A/C unit put out?

On a related note, our neighbor just had to have one of their units replaced and it was $14k. I have two 13-year old units sitting out there that I know are going to go out just as we are hitting the really expensive kid years (college x 2, cars x 2, auto insurance x2, food for a 6'2" teenage boy, etc.).

Whew! This makes me glad my hubby is an A/c man! We replaced all ours (inside & outside) for the cost of the units & materials a couple years ago for about $2700. 3ton air handler w/15kw heater & heat pump
It’s r-410a

Hmm.. how does an all inclusive/all expenses paid vacation to Dallas for you and the Hubby sometime in the next 3 years sound? 😂

Yep. Around here, you’ll get charged $400 just to have a service tech show up and change a start/run cap. Literally a $30 part and 10mins worth of work. Thankfully my HVAC guy is cool (see what I did there…) and I can call him up for simple things. He dropped off the cap and I replaced it myself. I handed $50 even though I know the cap is cheaper than that. But it was nice of him to swing by on his way to stiffing some old lady out of $400 … great guy 😂

Lol 😆
I’d take you up on that but My last couple trips to Texas sucked - I won’t be visiting that state for a while.
You need an hvac buddy…
Very thankful we can do just about everything we need ourselves or know someone else who can. We got a barter system going out here in the sticks 😁

Also offering a lovely all expense paid trip to Long Island. Tour the Hamptons, the beaches, wineries, world class water park and aquarium.......

And I'll GLADLY pay cost on replacing my struggling 22 year old beast.

Go buy some yourself at the parts house- many of them sell those to the public. They’re maybe $10- $15 around here.
Same with water heaters - get one from the parts house. & electrical supply too. If they don’t have it they can usually get it the next day.

They had a capacitor for my irrigation pump back when. It was a huge save because the electric supply said it was a plumbing part and the plumbing supply said it was electrical. The pool place only had pool pump capacitors.

Yeah. I wish I had done the water heater myself when it died last year. I was too busy at the time and the wife wanted her hot water back. So I bit the bullet and paid to have it done. I wound up helping the schmuck kid they sent out to do the job and even had to fix up his worthless vent connection … writing that check galled me but sometimes you got to suck it up and pay for the convenience of someone else to get it done faster ….
