Testing and start up new pool

Thanks kimkats. Now that my pH is at 7.5, is it still critical that I also increase my calcium hardness from 150 to 250 ppm right away?

My PB shocked pool last week and since added chlorine today, but told me to focus next 2 wks strictly on keeping pH at 7.5 and checking chlorine level. Not to do anything with CH until then?

Just curious why Pool Math tells me to have a goal of FC = 4. I'm currently at 0 with new pool.

Yet the back of the Aquacheck Free Chlorine test strips says I want to be at FC = 1?

I went ahead and added 16 oz of 8.25% bleach to pool for now. At goal of FC = 1 with pool math it would've been 33 oz. I was playing it safe.

What is your CSI when you enter your test results in PoolMath? If it is above -0.6 then you can wait a bit on CH. If it is below -0.6 then you should raise it.

Just tested again tonight. My results are all over the place. 2nd week of plaster:

pH, 7.5
FC, 0
CC, 0
CYA, 0
TA, 60
CH, 0 -- water turns pink, never changes color again when R-0012 added

When I input into Pool Math it says:
-Infin with a target of -0.31

Telling me to add:
- FC: 133 oz of 8.25% bleach
- TA: 211 oz baking soda
- CH: 833 oz calcium chloride
- 120 oz of stabilizer

It took 7 drops of R-0012 to get it to turn from pink to blue. No additional drops further changed the solution's color.

Is it safe to assume: 7 drops x 25 or a CH of 175?

If so, a CH of 175 would put my CSI at -0.6.

Ok. I'm just at -0.6. To get my TA up from 60 to 100, it's saying to put in 211
Oz (wt) or 169 oz (volume) of baking soda.

That's 13 lbs. I have 8 lbs on hand. Should I mix in a bucket of pool water and add to pool what I have now?

Thanks. Just dissolved 6 lbs 10 oz of baking soda (per Pool Math) in a bucket of pool water and broadcasted over a return in deep end. Will re-test tomorrow. Slowly getting there :)

Did a quick simple K-1000 test this morning and CL was around 2.0 and pH was 8.2. Added approx 32 oz of acid to 22,500 gal to bring it back within 7.5 range.

Previously when it was 7.8, 16 oz acid seemed to drop it to 7.5.

The PH scale is logarithmic, that farther away from 7 you get the bigger the delta is between numbers. i.e. it is a bigger jump from 8.0 to 8.2 than it is from 7.6 to 7.8. Also, 8.2 is the highest reading for the test. So, anything above that will also read as 8.2, when it could really be 8.6 or whatever.

So I just retested and my results are as follows. Water temp 43F. About 2 wk old new plaster.

pH: 7.5
FC: 0
TA: 100
CH: 200
CYA: 0

Pool Math CSI: -0.4 to -0.48 (showing green)

Am I OK to leave it as is or should I:

- add 133 oz of 8.25% bleach to get to a FC 4?
- add 167 oz of calcium to get to 250?

Wow. Now I see how easily you could go through bleach! I just added 133 oz of 8.25% per Pool Math calculator. Was an entire large bottle (121 oz) + 12 oz cup. Gone! [emoji50]

The pool store gave my calcium hypochlorite but I don't actually have calcium chloride (all our deicers are blends). Guess I'll have to return next week.

You can use the cal-hypo to chlorinate and raise the CH a bit. You are fine with CSI where it is. Anything above -0.6 is ok. -0.3 is better. Keep your pH up toward 7.8 to help.
