My very old 400,000 btu pool heater is not starting this season. I took the side panel off and vacuumed out the leaves and debris. I can hear the controller powering up and trying to generate a spark for about ten seconds and then giving up.

I have looked at the old heater starting threads but I would appreciate any suggestions on the most likely failure point and what to test. I have a volt-ohm meter and am somewhat familiar with electronic circuits.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Can't tell exactly what heater you have and can't find the manual for your heater and the manual for the EPC series one shows different controls than your photo. Photos of all components, nameplates (heater, gas valve, burner compartment, wiring etc.) might be helpful in figuring out exactly how your heater operates.

For your perusal.
Thank you so much!
Based on your suggestion about the igniter I tried to start the heater with a long butane candle lighter. BINGO! It started! It is heating now. I will see if it continues to work after being hot for awhile. I guess if it doesn't keep starting I will replace the igniter. I checked the YouTube videos and it looks like something I can do. I just need to locate the correct part.

Thanks again for your help!
