How about separating the individual components to see where the smell comes from? Maybe the container it's stored in.

People probably have different sensitivity to smell and different opinions on what chemical odor is normal. It seems like Phenol Red is the source of the odor, but it goes away if the box is open for about two weeks if you store it in a cool dry place...
