Taking care of my pool

How is the PH acting? Is it staying steady or does it go up every other day or so?

dc, for the CYA test GLANCE only! If you see the dot the pour to the next line and GLANCE in. I go line to line. Makes if much easier.

The PH keeps going up as you mentioned. I tried to get it down to a 7.4 last night, I will recheck it this evening. I will try the CYA test line to line this weekend as you suggested , this should help when doing the test. Thank you [emoji4]

Since your PH is going up like that you need to bring down your TA. PH and TA go hand in hand. It will take a little doing to find the sweet spot for both but once you do it will be smooth sailing from there.

How to lower TA

Work on getting you TA down to 90 and we will start finding where your pool likes it to be.

Hi Kim,

I tested the PH just now and now I am at a 8.2 I am going to add 70oz of MA to get to a 7.2, and I will rest this weekend. I think I need the TA at 70. I can't wait until I get better at this, I am keeping my FC at 5/6, I hope that is correct.

Hi I was wondering how long I need to run my pool during the summer in Las Vegas, and should it run during the day or the evening? I have it on from 8am-3pm and I run it for about an hour when I add MA or Bleach as needed in the evening. Thanks

Hi Kim,

Thank you, I was looking around for this info and I was pulling old discussion threads. I am not sure how we are billed by the Nevada power company, I will have to look in to this.

Hi I tested the water just now

FC 6ppm
CC .5
TC 6.5ppm
CH 400
TA 40 ( I did this test 2x's) - Should I add 70oz of baking soda? I thought I should add 9.90z of baking soda to bring up to a 50 for now?
PH 7.8 - I thought I would add 14oz of MA to bring this down to a 7.5?
CYA I think a 30 -this one mess with my mind - I did it 3x's I will retest during the day.

Do I need to bring my TA up, I am confused, it was at a 80 on 4.23.17. I am not sure what I did wrong. I am bit a confused.

TA is low. We will take care of that in a min. Lets talk about why it it lower now. When you use the muriatic acid to lower the PH you are also lowering the TA some. It will take some time to find the sweet spot with these two. TA and PH are best friends so must be in step with each other. Keeping a good log of your test results will help you find the balance YOUR pool wants with them.

Once you get the TA and PH in sync you will know you found the sweet spot and should not have to do too much with them afterwards. BUT finding the sweet spot will take some testing and messing. I am going to share a link that shows what we use to move each item:

Pool School - Recommended Pool Chemicals

You will notice you will need some baking soda  to push your TA back up. Yeah that stuff in the yellow box BUT you can get it in bigger bags most places. Neat stuff huh?? and MUCH cheaper than what they sell in the pool store!

CYA test, oh how I hate this test , now lets do it my way.................GLANCE!!!!! NOT stare for the dot. Do this:

-mix regent with pool water in little bottle

-pour mixed water into tube to first line (100) GLANCE in. If you see the dot at the GLANCE pour to next line

-keep going from line to line and GLANCING in until you do not see the dot. Call it that number!

I hope this helps!

Hi Kim,

Thank you, I will premix the baking soda with pool water before I pour it in front of the running return. I also wanted to ask if should bring the TA up to 70 all at once, or should I bring it up slowly, maybe 10 at a time? When I bring the TA up, it will bring my PH up, as well. Do I do one step at time, or do I work on the TA, PH at the same time and does having my TA down cause problems for the plaster or pool equipment? I have been logging everything in a note book and spreadsheet.

I will retest the CYA as you recommended, this test can play mind games with my head.. LOL. Thank you again!

I would turn it on high and run it about 30 or so mins after you add the baking soda. If you want to go the extra mile you can brush your pool at the same time. You should be able to test the TA at this time to see where you are at.

Thank you ,added chemicals and tested tonight

FC 4.5 add 52 bleach to get to a 7
TA 70- I I added enough BS to bring it up to 60 and it brought it up to 70
PH 7.8 add 22ozMA
To get it to 7.4
I think it is good now? [emoji4]
