SWG seems to be working harder with less output

You can run a SLAM at 70 ppm, just takes some chlorine to get to SLAM level FC and then lots of reagents to test.

I suspect you are fine. Should be able to move forward tomorrow.
Thanks so much! You have been so helpful. And this silly mistake of mine has certainly taught me some new stuff! So all is not lost. I really appreciate the time.

Ugggh. So yes a drop. Water is still clear, but it dropped by 4. I’m going to slam today, brush and vacuum, clean the filter again, and perform the test again tonight. Still no CC so is it a bit strange that I lost so much?

Also how soon after adding the chlorine do I test? Is there a certain time to leave it? I know to test often, just not sure how long I need to leave it before checking.

Every hour is great until your FC loss slows , then every hour or two is fine.

Thank you. I can’t believe I’ve gotten myself into this pickle! Been so vigilant testing water daily, ensuring everything was just right. I can’t believe forgetting to clean my filter did this! Ugghh. Lesson learned in a big way.

We are on our way. It keeps dropping - will it get to stage where it will stay at slam level?
Probably not. The sun will always consume some of it. I wouldn't worry about what you lose between additions, so many variables. Just keep it up and we'll get back to OCLT.

Ok great! And we can go for a dip when it drops, before adding the chlorine again right? The water is crystal clear and gorgeous…

So my last test showed nothing changed from my last addition. Assuming it doesn’t drop again, I just continue to the OCLT right? I’m testing it on the hour. If it drops again slightly, do I add more chlorine before the sun goes down? Or call it a day as far as adding goes and cross my fingers it doesn’t drop overnight?

GREAT! Go to checking every two hours now. Yes OCLT tonight! If you add more chlorine and end of day, just wait 30 minutes with pump running before you take start FC test.

Ugghh! So last night at 9pm it tested at 29. This morning at 6.20 it tested at 27.5 the first time, 28 the second time and 27.5 the third time. Same water sample, same test, obviously the problem is me! So… what should I do? 0 CC. Should I need to continue slamming today?

Also the pool has been crystal clear since putting in the first 2 gallons of chlorine two days ago. In fact I’m not even sure it’s ever been this clear!!!

If it were me, I would SLAM for another day just to be safe. Also you dont need to test every two hours at this point. Do it every 4. Skip the OCLT tonight, and let the FC drop into the teens tomorrow. Then run the OCLT. At FC of 29 the chance for a testing error is higher.

Most people rush to end their SLAM too quickly. Also if it were me, after the SLAM is done (most likely tomorrow). Keep you FC at around 20% of your CYA for a few days after that to be sure.

Then and this is the important part. Run FC hot for the rest of your life. I like to keep a CYA of 80, and make sure my FC is in the double digits. When its like that I never have a problem. Any time I flirt with lower numbers bad things happen.

I have tried to do this - 5 has been my number but I’m gonna up that to 7. I have a 80 UV protected enclosure so everyone has said 70 is fine for CYA. I haven’t had a drop below 2 in FC - once I think a couple of weeks back, since getting the pool. I test for that daily and do full tests twice a week. I turned up the SWG immediately but in hindsight I should have put some chlorine in then as that’s when the issue started with my SWG working hard and not keeping the number up. I’m a little confused as to why this happened in the first place - is it because I didn’t clean my filter? Thankfully CC has remained zero - but I haven’t had zero chlorine in my pool not even once. The problem has been going on for a few weeks now I reflect on it - I just didn’t realize the change in color was indicative as the pool was still clear. It wasn’t green either. Just a different color if that makes sense, and the FC was suddenly difficult to stabilize. I emptied some water and the CYA was low for a couple of days. All learning I suppose. But I’m still a bit confused as to why exactly. Anyway, I will keep the pool up at 28 today and then follow your advice to the letter. I’m very good at following instructions - retired teacher!!! 🤣

Ok, but think about this. If you CYA is 70, how about keeping your FC around 8 or even 9. It just gives you a bigger buffer. Let’s you test less often, and have less worry.

Also when you get a huge rain that may dump a lot of algae that is built up on your screens enclosure you wont need to worry.

Just a thought. All amateurs run FC low. If you look at all the Pros and guides and whatever here, they all run FC hot. Guess who gets algae and who does not.

I understand what you are saying - but in all fairness, as an amateur, I tan my FC according to the TFP CYA table. 70 CYA = 5 FC. I was also advised not to raise my CYA because of the UV protection screens. But I now know that 5 isn’t sufficient - as it allowed me to take a drop that caused me to have problems following some extremely heavy rain. When that drop happened I don’t know, but it must have happened and I can only assume my SWG running 24/7 picked it back up before I tested that day. Every day is a learning opportunity and you can believe me when I say - I will be running it hot from here in out without a doubt!!! 🤦🏻‍♀️😊

Also one more question - when can I put some muriatic acid in? Is it ok to lower the Ph today while continuing to SLAM?
