I've been told to avoid the use of sun screen in my pool because it will stop up the pleated filter. How big is this problem - I don't want my grand kids to burn...

USE SUNSCREEN!!! One thing you can do to lower the amount making its way to the cartridges is to throw Scumbugs in the skimmers. They soak up surface oils. Then squeeze them out daily or as you empty the skimmers. There are several other varieties as well. One is like a ball.
The scumbugs can also be used to clean the black gunk off of the inside of the skimmer (oils).
