Small Pool Build - Brisbane, Australia [emoji1037]

That's great that your slide is finally set for install!

I agree, the red location. That way the kids (and maybe big kids) are coming in on one end instead of the middle of the pool. Leaves a little more 'in pool' space I think.

It is! We (well our boys) are excited [emoji38] Thanks for your input. The red location only occurred to me briefly a few weeks ago... then promptly left my overworked brain. Just popped into my head again tonight. I think I would definitely prefer this location. Will have to see if it’s workable but fingers crossed it is. It’s going to be an eyesore wherever it goes but will be worth it if it results in happy tired kids!

I also think the 'red' position is the go....

Thanks [emoji4] Hopefully we can make it work as I’m pretty set on the red area. Sometimes I think these delays I’ve had are for a reason. Had the slide gone in 2 months ago with everything else it would have gone in the green area. Having had time to see how we use the pool area, it’s clear that wouldn’t work well there.

Loving the hairnets! We had high winds last night and so much pollen in the pool today. Jeff had to be cleaned mid run as he kept floating in protest. Hairnet caught quite a bit too. Pool is looking beautiful though. My youngest likes working alongside Jeff and using the little brush to get to areas Jeff can’t reach.

An observation I have made... my pool always has had a smell of chlorine especially when removing the cover. Not dirty pool chlorine just fresh chlorine. OCLTs have been fine as have my test results with CCs being 0 for a very long time. Searching the site it seemed that sometimes it just is. Anyway fast forward to yesterday I decided to run the pump on medium rather than the usual slow. Later in the day when removing the cover to run Jeff pretty much no smell at all. Cover went back on afterwards. This morning after the strong winds I decided to up it to high for the day and when I removed the cover later in the day to clean etc there was absolutely zero smell at all. FC remains steady at 7.5 and CCs 0. I would have assumed a stronger smell today as the FC worked to eliminate the pollen and debris. Hmm. So could this really be a circulation issue? If so what rpm would best to run on as standard to eliminate the issue? I obviously don’t want to run the pump on high speed constantly. Thoughts?

General consensus is that you should remove the cover every now and then (daily?) to allow the water to breath somewhat.

Have you tried to clean/skim the surface thoroughly before covering to see if it is indeed stuff trapped between the cover and water which is causing the smell?

Cover comes off every single day for at least 3 hours so I can run the robot and clean etc. I run Jeff on his long setting and do this manually as if left on auto he will run with the cover on and this doesn’t end well. Usually this is during the day but not always when the sun is on the pool. Pool is cleaned when the cover is off so robot, skimmed and brushed every second day ish. With the exceptions of nights like last night there is nothing in the pool or skimmer socks ever. Nada. Not a single leave or speck of pollen.

Chlorine is odourless. It's only combined chlorine you're smelling, which might be down around 0.1 or 0.2 and not detected by the drop test. Or you may be smelling it on your skin after it's combined with the ammonia in perspiration which also creates chloramine. There's also very slow oxidation of the cover, although I'm not sure if that results in combined chlorine, but I suspect it would. Removing the cover allows the chloramines to be burned off by the sun. No need to reconsider pump speed or run time. That can be set based on skimming and heating needs, along with the amount of sparkle you like, with sparkle also enhanced by the robot! :)

I agree.............your tests and the looks of the water say what you are doing with the pump run speed is working. I would not up the pump speed just because you have the CC smell when you take the cover off. That is very normal and is just the FC doing what it should..........killing what is in the water which you notice with the CC smell. Now why you don't notice it when the pump is on a higher speed......that is a puzzle and I am not sure why that is....will have to do some poking around to see what I find.

I had thought all along it was cc that I was smelling. Just found it weird that it has disappeared in the past day when nothing else has changed. Will just write it down to one of those coincidental things. Is there a more sensitive cc test or shouldn’t I bother since it’s definitely under .5? Might just try to get the cover off more often when the sun is on the pool. Just hard during the week when I’m at work.

Thanks Kim. I am a bit puzzled too but going to chalk it up to one of those strange coincidences I think. I just wondered whether the fc was better able to do its thing with stronger circulation?

That could be but the lower pump speed works so go with it. I would not bother trying to have the cover off more. Your schedule seems to be working.

Now when your part of the world starts warming up again we WILL readdress this!

There is no other test for CC that I know of. The powder/drop one seems to work so roll with it.

Combined chlorine under 1.0 is perfectly OK, safe and so on. You can increase the sample size to 25 mls and then each drop = 0.2, however I'm afraid all that would happen is you would eat up testing supplies faster. I think your pool is in great shape :)

Thanks. I’m just going to leave it be I think unless there’s reason to act. Makes me feel like my pool is dirty when I smell ccs though. Will try to adjust my thinking that it’s the fc doing its thing.
