SLAM woes

Everything is great.

Get 30ppm of CYA into the pool. Use the sock method.

Lower your pH in .4 increments using muriatic acid. Test after 30 minutes. When pH is 7.4, start the slam process, your target FC is 12. Link-->SLAM Process

I don't have any muriatic acid on hand so I'll have to pick some up. In the meantime, do I keep the FC at 10? Do I wait to add CYA as well or go ahead and start that part?

Start the CYA. If the CYA is in the sock, then chlorinate for 30 CYA until you get the muriatic. Use the non-slam target. Link-->FC/CYA Levels

Once you get your acid and dose, your slam target is 12.

Megan, along with the SLAM Process you are about to start (once you get the acid), continue the other bucket routine to capture more iron. Don't be surprised when you add more chlorine that the iron "might" react. If it does, don't panic. Just go with it and continue the SLAM. We always tackle algae first, then circle-back to iron. Congrats on doing your own first set of tests. :goodjob:

Question- will the pool by safe to swim in during this? I was really hoping to have it ready by saturday 😬😬

Hello again! We used the pool Saturday and Sunday and it was crystal clear but now it's more of a teal color again. I've been adding chlorine once a day mainly because i've just been busy and not home a lot. The CYA has fully dissolved in the socks. So I'm wondering when I test again for CYA levels? Or do I not even bother? I put enough in to reach 30ppm. For the SLAM- do I SLAM for a level of 30ppm? How often do I keep checking that the level stays at 12 for FC? I'm assuming the algae wasn't all dead if it started turning green again after a couple days of keeping the FC at maintenance. It WAS staying at 5ppm overnight so it wasn't dropping all the way to 0. I think i was really close to being done but then I backed off too much. My PH has also skyrocketed so I'm getting more muriatic acid today. Why is PH going up all the time? Is it the well water or just the algae causing it?

ETA: Is it okay to have two 3" pucks in a floater during this?

Thank you!!!!

I'm going to take a crack at this... one thing at a time :)

Take those pucks out - they are acidic - you shouldn't need them if we can nail this FC/CYA

---

FC During SLAM:

During SLAM - only focus on your FC. You need to maintain a SLAM-level FC until you can pass all three criteria (crystal clear water, pass an OCLT, CC of 0.5 or lower)

What is your current CYA level? You need to maintain your SLAM against that level. If you're saying your CYA is 30 PPM, you need FC to be at 12 or higher (per the chart here - set for SLAM). If you can, check every 2-3 hours and replace FC as it falls during those time periods - at minimum you need to check FC 3-4 times a day.

If you let your FC fall to a 5 PPM - then you're going to have some ground to make up.

---
PH During SLAM:

FC above 10 nulls a PH reading

If you are showing FC of 5, go ahead and check your PH - and lower it to 7.2 - 7.5 using muriatic acid and restart SLAM.

---

Rule of thumb:
SLAM or Maintenance - don't let your FC bottom out. Zero FC is a breeding ground for algae.

Once you're done SLAMing - let's check your full panel and we'll show you the "range" for your FC. Your daily maintenance needs to keep you in that range and allow for overnight loss/evaporation.

@PoolStored How'd I do?!

During slam, you need to be consistent. Early in the slam process, every 2-3 hours, later at leas 3-4 times a day.

Don't bother, assume it is 30.

Your FC slam level for 30CYA is 12 FC

pH test is invalid with FC>10. Ignore pH during SLAM.

I only worried about PH because a few replies ago, I was told to bring it down to 7.2 before starting the SLAM. So after I start, it doesn't matter anymore?

Just checking in here. All day yesterday every 2-3 hours, I checked and added chlorine to keep it at 12ppm. Usually it was anywhere from 7-9ppm when I tested. Is this normal? Do I keep the 2-3 hour routine until it stays at 12ppm after 2-3 hours?
