Hey TFP,

I’m a new to this pool ownership gig, and super grateful for the level headed bunch of folks that maintain this site and are active in the forums. Love it!

I have an inground plaster pool/spa combo, with shared filtration and heating. My builder has been pretty rough to deal with, and we went through the first few months of ownership with the SWG not working (it’s a pentair IC40), between summer travels and busy work life the balance got sad and algae started to grow. I didn’t realize it was algae at first, because it kinda just looked like dirt or dust in the bottom of the pool, and not like the pictures I’d seen online. But when I couldn’t keep FC levels up ever, I started asking the internet and found TFP. New favorite place. The SWG finally started working, and I can’t get my builder to reply if they fixed it while I was at work or if something happened (I cleaned my filter cartridges really well, and got my CYA levels up), but as we know SWG isn’t capable of SLAMing, so I turned it off again.

Now I’ve got the k2006c and I’m three days into the SLAM. My last test results:
FC: 16
CC: .2
CYA: 43ish
pH: 7.2 (before starting, haven’t checked since)
TA: 150
Salt: 3700
CH: 500

Since the water is looking much better and I’m into the .2 CC range on the last two tests, I was going to do an OCLT tonight. But I’m curious, how much time is really needed to measure the drop? Without waiting for sun to go down, I have an automatic cover, and I don’t think any UV is getting through its quite thick. Would it be possible to get an accurate enough loss test with just the cover closed? If so how long is a good time to wait? 8hrs or just 4 and get at least one turn over?

The big reason I’m wondering is that I’m supposed to go out of town in the morning and I’m hoping I can just leave it and schedule the SWG to maintain a lower level while I’m gone.

What do y’all think?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Welcome to TFP! If possible, I would leave the cover off during the SLAM. Best to let the sun remove those CCs naturally. As for the OCLT, time can vary. Ideally something in the 6-8 hr range with no sun on the water, but even a little less or more time should work.

Thanks! I should have replied a while back, but I did start leaving the cover off and finished the SLAM.
