I’ve been frustrated by the changes in what I perceive in pressure in the system. I have a pool cleaner that says everything is fine but the cleaner moves around at different speeds. Sometimes very fast and sometimes slow. I took a video of the skimmer and I see things just going in and out of it. Not sure if that’s supposed to be like that. The filter was rinsed last week and all the valves checked. But something is off.should there be an in line gage somewhere to measure pressure? I something gets in the impeller how would one know?

It sounds like you're dealing with inconsistent pressure issues in your pool cleaning system. Here are some steps and considerations to help diagnose and resolve the problem:

Possible Issues

  1. Clogged or Partially Blocked Lines:
    • Debris in the skimmer, pump basket, or lines can cause fluctuations in pressure. Even small obstructions can lead to varying performance of the cleaner.
  2. Air Leaks:
    • Air getting into the system can cause inconsistent pressure. This could be from a loose fitting, cracked pipe, or a faulty gasket or seal in the pump.
  3. Impeller Issues:
    • If debris gets into the impeller, it can cause erratic performance. The impeller needs to be clean and free of obstructions to maintain consistent pressure.
  4. Filter Issues:
    • Even if the filter was recently rinsed, it might still be dirty or clogged. A deep cleaning or replacement might be necessary, especially if the filter media is old.
  5. Pump Issues:
    • The pump itself might have issues, such as worn-out bearings or a failing motor, which can lead to inconsistent pressure.

Diagnostic Steps

  1. Visual Inspection:
    • Check all visible components for cracks, leaks, or loose connections. Pay special attention to the pump, skimmer, and all fittings.
  2. Skimmer and Pump Basket:
    • Ensure that the skimmer and pump basket are completely free of debris.
  3. Air Leak Test:
    • With the pump running, you can check for air leaks by looking for bubbles in the pump basket or at the return jets. Use a garden hose to run water over potential leak points; if the bubbles stop, you've found a leak.
  4. Impeller Inspection:
    • Turn off the pump, open the pump housing, and inspect the impeller for debris. Clean it thoroughly if needed.
  5. Filter Inspection:
    • Backwash the filter thoroughly if it’s a sand filter. If it’s a cartridge filter, consider a deep clean or replacement.

Tools and Measurements

  1. Inline Pressure Gauge:
    • Installing an inline pressure gauge can help you monitor the system pressure. It should be installed between the pump and the filter. Normal operating pressure will vary depending on the system, but sudden drops or spikes can indicate a problem.
  2. Flow Meter:
    • A flow meter can give you real-time data on the water flow rate, which can help identify issues with the pump or blockages in the system.

Steps to Add an Inline Pressure Gauge

  1. Turn Off the System:
    • Ensure the pump and system are turned off before making any modifications.
  2. Locate a Suitable Spot:
    • Find a spot between the pump and filter where you can install the gauge. This is usually on the output side of the pump.
  3. Install the Gauge:
    • Cut the pipe if necessary and install the gauge using appropriate fittings. Ensure it is securely tightened and sealed to prevent leaks.
  4. Turn On the System:
    • Once installed, turn the system back on and observe the pressure readings.

Jv,

Please post several pics of your equipment pad.. Most of us need to think about how your system should function, which is hard to do while trying to watch a video..

Also, most pics can be blown up to see things better.

I can't tell for sure... Does your skimmer have a weir door, that floats up and down between the mouth of the skimmer and the basket?

Thanks,

Jim R.
