Just spent a wad of cash for circupool rj-60, and being my first SWG, do I need to protect the control box and cell with a shade cloth from the harsh phoenix az sun.

I think lots of folks in your area do. Shade the box with the electronics. I don;t think it is necessary for the cell anymore then if you shade your other pool equipment, which some folks do.
