Sand or Algae?

Hello!

First summer with a pool here! Wondering if this looks more like sand or algae? It brushes away easily, so I’m thinking algae, but it keeps returning! I have tried vacuuming to waste and triple shocking and it returns within the next day or two. Here is a picture from tonight (pre-vacuum). I since vacuumed to waste and triple shocked again with tricolor. I will take a better picture in the morning.

Welcome! I‘m going to guess algae because your water appears somewhat hazy.

We can help you clear that up, and keep it clean and beautiful. There are a few things we ask you to do - first, get a proper test kit so you will know exactly what your numbers are, rather than relying on inaccurate pool store testing (and being pushed to buy products you don’t need). We recommend the Taylor K2006, or even better, the TF-100, available to order at the link in my signature.

While you wait for your kit, add liquid chlorine only. Use the Pool Math app to figure out how much to add to give you 5 ppm. Brush and vacuum. And read up on the ABCs of Pool Water Chemistry, link available in my signature. Time to go to Pool School!

Once you have your test kit, run your tests and post your numbers in this thread, like this:

FC
CC
PH
TA
CYA
CH

Once we see the numbers, we can help with next steps. And to give you something to look forward to, have a look at the “TFP clear“ link in my signature!

Welcome to the forum

Triple shocking (whatever that means) is adding CYA to your pool which is contributing to your algae bloom. You are on a merry-go-round and probably will not get off it until you learn to SLAM your pool.

Please read "The "ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry" up in Pool School
