So, I had a party for my three year old, with a high bather load, and likely lots of peeing in the pool, dealing with a largely not yet potty trained group. CC was higher than .5 so I decided to shock. CYA is around 80-90 (but who actually knows, I hate that subjective test!) so shock level is around 35. Added what the pool math app said I needed to have to get to 35 (liquid chlorine), and my Taylor FAS-DPD test said I was at 27. Let it go a couple days for chlorine down within normal range (I shoot for 7) and still had lots of CC. Added two gallons of shock, which, according to the app, should have taken me way above 35, still did not test that high, around 27 again, still combined chlorine. I have a new TF test kit for this year, since my Taylor kit is near empty (but not expired!) and got a different result. Letting chlorine come back down yesterday/this morning so we can swim this afternoon. Taylor test kit is giving me chlorine of 10.5, TF test kit is giving me 15. Using 10 mL test for both.

TA 110
PH 7.5
CH 260
CYA 80-90
Salt 3800
Borates 50 (but again, so subjective…who knows)

What is wrong with which test kit?

Next time buy just the refills. They go on sale for $44 each spring at tftestkits.net.

What's the date code on the bleach ?

What brand / from where ?

Until proven otherwise, I will always side with the newer supplies.

Then factor that Nates supplies are guaranteed fresh and the Taylor kit may have sat on a shelf for months before you got it last year. It may be older than you think. So I'm even more leaning that the new supplies are the correct ones.

Also, you're good. Let the FC fall back to range and carry on with regular maintenance. Perform an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test to prove it.

So, furthering the mystery, TF powder with Taylor Titrating agent = 15, Taylor powder with TF Titrating agent = 15. Taylor with Taylor = 10.5, TF with TF = 15. Now I'm more confused than before!

Sorry! I failed to mention that the titrating agent for the Taylor kit was just purchased this year as well!

Anyway you slice it, the Taylor drops or powder will likely be older than Nates supply. So even if both are new, I'll trust his.

Your bleach code is 23(2023) 174(day 174). It's a year old and weak. At least there's that answer. :)

Thank you for your help! That’s why I love this app!

Also, the ONE time I stop at Pool City to buy something instead of my usual mom and pop pool store…go figure!
So. My Mom and Pop are truly out to help their customers VS the corporate store where I was a metric instead of a customer.

But Mom and Pop learned the same industry garbage from the same sales reps. They believed whatever they were told without ever even reading the labels. My GC for my pool build thought his liquid shock was 99% (12.5% on the label) and the store often had me add copper products to then question 'what I did" to have high copper.

The intent was pure but the intel/info was just as terrible. I legit avoid both stores now unless it's a small part that doesn't matter how long it sat on their shelf, and I can't wait for Amazon.
