Rough coping re-surface needed

Hi,

My old pool has coping that is quite rough and can easily scratch swimmers. I’d like to find a way to resurface the coping to 1) provide a smoother surface, 2) fill hairline cracks in the grout between coping pieces, and 3) fill hairline cracks in a couple coping pieces.

I found some forum threads in TFP that mentioned options such as 1) grind the surface smooth, 2) cover it with paint, 3) cover it with a grout mixture, and 4) cover it with a product of E-Z Patch. Since I hope to fill hairline cracks I think option 1 is not valid for me. Of the other options found in the TFP forums I found none that provided information with conclusions on what option was used and what the final outcome was.

I’d appreciate hearing about your experience with resurfacing old coping or any other suggestions on how one might resurface old coping.

Thanks,
Charlie

I think you found no conclusions because none of those options work well.

Your coping is deteriorating and cracking. No filler on top of that will stop that process. You cannot get good adhesion for anything to stick well.

You can try various materials but I think you will find nothing lasts long and your coping will require continuous maintenance.

Eventually that coping will need to be replaced.

Roughness is in the skin of the beholder! My coping has never generated a complaint, and its as jagged and rough as they come. It's part of its "charm!" It's probably only you that has an issue with yours. And that's not a reason for not trying to make it better, if it really bothers you, but even if you do manage to find some miracle that makes it like new, nobody but you will notice that either.
