Got the sand in the filter and the multiport on. I'm thinking of redoing some of the pipes. so this pic is the pump to the filter. Is that a nipple? and then would I need a female to hub adapter, followed by pipe, followed by an inline check valve (I read that is a good thing?), followed by pipe, followed by fittings, etc to filter. Can anyone verify this is a decent plan??

next we have the fitting from a pipe to the heater. Can anyone tell me what it's called?

There is more I want to replace but these are my starting ones. Any input is super appreciated!!

Thank you !

Those connectors are called unions and should be at every joining of pvc-equimpent(filter,pump,ic,etc..)
The elbows at the top are not rated for pool, just for drain(no pressure). So its a good time to change all of them
with PVC SCH40 and unions. I would eliminate the nipples and straight to the union. You dont need a check valve at that point.
Are you having problems with the basket draining?

No problems with the basket. so, instead of a nipple, I'm lookinig for a threaded male to socket connector (or union?)?

I saw the check vale recommendation in a pump manual, said if you have another pump running parallel, you should add a check valve. My waterfall pump is right next to the main pump and its pipes pipes run parallel. and there are different types of unions? I'm still trying to decipher the terminology. Slip, male threaded, female threaded.

and thank you!

Thank you for the link! I have two of those right now and ordered more for when I re-do some of it.

I was confused by the one pipe screwing directly into the pump and then the union at the heater doesn't look like the unions you linked to. It looks all hodge podged and I want to do it correctly.

so can someone check me?

We do not want DWV fittings
We do want schedule 40 for pressure
And it seems like for my situation--Pump to sand filter, sand filter to heater--all I need is pipe, simple socket/hub couplers, and 45 and 90 degree fittings, and unions like the link above

Although the current connections to the heater looks like it's not a full union, but it should be?
And the connection to the pump is just a pipe screwed in, and it should be a union?

Do I have it mostly correct?

Thanks again, I know these questions are really basic. I very much appreciate the help.
And if any experts are in Austin, man I'd pay you to come look at all my plumbing and explain it and then how I could re-do it correctly:)

The union above the pump is fine and the same thing.

A 'pump union' is alot beefier than what's there and could be swapped out while you are already there cutting and gluing, or you could wait for what's there to go bad at a latter time.

Cool. I'm going to get everything hooked up because the pool has been not running for days. But once I get it functioning normally, I will post pics because I would love to know what everything is and what was done wrong. I know some things but others were confusing to a pool guy who came to school me as well as to me.

one step at a time. (and every step seems to take longer than I anticipate!)
