Our pump for the spa jets needs to be replaced and I have received a quote for $4k from our pool company. First, does the regulation for variable speed pumps apply to a pump for intermittent on demand jets in the spa - not the filter pump? I do not read it that way. The cost of motors for a 2HP pump is around $600. I am sure there are other parts that need to be replaced with a new motor, but can anyone tell me why an estimate woud be as high as $4k? What am I missing here?

Welcome to TFP.

What model is your existing spa pump?

Show us pictures of the pump and motor data plate.

D.O.E. regulations no longer differentiate the use of a pool pump.

That $4K quote for a new VSP is probably the "going rate" in your area, especially if there is a lot of re-plumbing involved. Then you add the overhead that a company has, and they have to make a profit, and you get the price for it installed. You could call around for a better quote, but if you use another company be prepared to lose the pool company you now have if they do service.

Those single-speed motors will soon be gone as they are no longer legal to be manufactured or imported to the US for any pool use, don't know about other industries. The original wording of the regulation allowed for existing stock to be sold. That may have changed, we can't get those motors in CA so I don't keep up.

If you're able, you could DIY and install a motor of your choice if you can get one, but it really isn't legal for a company to do so, though I have never heard what enforcement or penalties there may be.
