I have a Hayward SwimPure Extreme salt generator that is just under 5 years old. Cell was clean but I wasn’t getting any chlorine. Had a service guy come by who checked the board and said that it looked like cell needs replacing. He was trying to steer me towards replacing whole system. Should I just get a replacement cell? Any reason I couldn’t replace that myself?

Welcome to TFP.

Replacing the new system with what?

How many gallons are in your pool?

What size cell do you have?

Post pics of your pool equipment, SWG control parcel, and the cell so we can see what your situation is.

He recommended a new Hayward S3 Salt system 25000 gallons
My pool is about 10000 gallons
Current cell is TCELL925SWP

I bet he did.
Swapping the cell is very easy & not much profit for him.
Buying the s3 is really not necessary unless you want/need the automation features.
You can replace your current t9 cell with a t15 (40k gal) cell if you wish to have a little longer life. you will just need to change the cell type in the settings menu.
Replacing the cell takes maybe 5-10 minutes.
Your current controller will probably last another 10+ years or more. It also has many easily replaceable components.
With 5 years of use in sunny florida with long seasons your current cell is likely depleted.
But Let’s confirm you need a new cell…
This is the basic information we need to know in diagnosing a problem:
  • Report all diagnostic readings when you..
    • Move the switch from auto to off and check all of the readings.
    • Move the switch back to auto and recheck the readings.
    • Move the switch to off for a minute and then back to auto and recheck the readings.
  • What are the first seven characters of the cell and box serial numbers?
  • What is the actual salinity and how are you measuring it?
Also, be sure to manually chlorinate daily while you’re figuring out the swcg.

Your cell was manufactured in 2019 and has a 4 year warranty. you may have some warranty remaining on the cell if it is not working…

Actual salinity measured at pool supply store from water sample is 2900 ppm

Last two tests chlorine has been good, so system appears to be working. I have not added liquid chlorine for 3 weeks. Lots of rain and temperatures in the 80s over that time. However the salt level reading does not agree with salinity as tested.

Your cell is depleted and needs to be replaced.

Four years in Florida is about the expected life.
