Re-Plumbing the pump area, less 90s are better?

Hi all, here are a few links to some pictures of how the pump area looks as of today...

What sparked the following ideas is that I am installing a SWG in the next couple weeks, so if I have to do any PVC work, I might as well make a day of it.

From the pump into the filter there is a "n" loop that is about 12-18in up, then down. Is there a reason this is like this? The pipe coming from the pump looks like it was repaired a couple times because there are some PVC couplers in line that make it seem like there was a repair. Can I make it more of a across and down from the pump output or does that up & down serve a function?

On the return side from the solar heater, it comes out from the wall, up and turns, has a hose connection, down and turn, tablet feeder, and then down again on its way to the pool. It seems excessive to me. I think what I should do is cut the pipe coming from the heater about 6in shorter from where is is now so it is the same height as the return pipe to the pool, so instead of the zig/zag it does now its straight out from the wall, a 90 to align with the return pipe and then another 90 to point down. That would eliminate a good deal of turns.

The other thing is the suction from the pool and return is 1.5in pipe. From the filter to the heater it is 2in pipe. There is a 2->1.5 reducer in the return line right before the hose connection. The pump to filter is 1.5in as well. Does this make sense? Should I try to get a 2in pipe between pump and filter? And at what point should the return pipe go back to 1.5in? Immediately before it goes down into the ground? After SWG (It says it has fittings for 1.5 and 2in, so it could be used as a pipe converter)?

Thank you for any pointers, I want to make sure I can do this as best as I can.

I really like nice, neat clean pvc piping. Yours is not bad and the efficiency you would gain from all the refitting is quite small, especially for your 1.1 HP pump.

I would spray roundup and clean/paint your piping and put in your new SWG.

You certainly can go ahead and remodel but you won't gain much at all in efficiency. You don'y have any drips, do you?

Thanks for the reply Dave! Roundup is on the list this weekend, I see you are in Florida as well, everything green popped up in the past couple days since it's been warmer. (Go figure lol)

Some of the stuff does bug me, there aren't any leaks..but some of the joints look sloppy to me. That is another reason why I think it may be good to just do it all now.

You sound like me. If it bugs you now, it will bug you until you get it the way you want it. I recently re-made all the visible pvc to my irrigation (not too complicated) just because it was crooked and sloppy looking. It was annoying every time I walked past.

Now, having it nice and neat is a source of pleasure and you will never regret if you re-do yours. mas985 is our hydraulics guru on the forum and he has convinced us that sweep 90's and smoothing out the turns is seldom worth it in efficiency but aesthetics is another animal.

Post a before and after pic if you go ahead with it.

Still need to do a little cable management with the cell and flow switch cables, but I am much happier with the return pipe layout over what it was. First time doing PVC work, I'll take it! :snorkle:
