Question about plumbing to my new filter

Here is a picture of my new filter in position and almost ready to be plumbed.
I have never worked with PVC plumbing (or any kind for that matter) and need some help figuring this out.
The pipes don't match the old filter. Is there an extender piece that I can use to make the pipe taller? See this fancy diagram I whipped up.

Where you show an extender piece, you want one of these:

It's called a union and it allows you to disconnect the pipes so you can remove the multiport valve for access to the sand for deep cleaning.

Okay I have some of those. I wasn't sure where I should have it, or if I should have that closer to the multiport valve
