question about pentair easytouch and controlling heater

ok i just measured the line and it appears to be 3/4". should i run a new line? no rise. it is a straight shot

So the line never rises or comes down at all? It comes out of the meter at the right height? 3/4" should be just fine. Like I said earlier, I don't have issues with the Raypak's and this size of pipe/run.

How are you measuring the line diameter?

In any case, if you don't follow the installation manual, you're risking having problems. A non-compliant installation would likely not be covered under warranty.

3/4" line from the meter to a 400,000 btu/hr heater would definitely be too small and violate the manufacturer's requirements and local code.

Can you post pictures of the heater and meter?

Is this going to be permitted and inspected?

James, I am looking to replace my existing heater. Actually I was a but misleading in that the meter is not there. When I cancelled my service years ago because my heater broke (only thing that I have using gas at my house) they took it. So in the picture, just to the right the meter will go. as for the line I just did a guesstimate - measured the outside diameter. As for an inspection, the gas company told me I did not need one since it was an existing line and they are just putting a meter where one once was. I don't want to do anything stupid so I appreciate the feedback. Like I said, it appears the line coming off of the meter (where it will be) looks to be a 2" line and then about 1/2 way down behind the air conditioner it looks to step down.

and to clarify, i plan on using a professional. i am tired of messing with my pool gear myself.

Pipe size...........O.D
3/4"..................1.050"
1"......................1.315
1-1/4"...............1.660
1-1/2"...............1.900"
2"......................2.375"

In any case, having a professional do the gas is best. Using smaller line than the book requires might work ok, but why take a chance?

now, if i can just find one. one did not return my call and the other told me to call back next year.... jeez. and this is par for the course

Yes it can be hard to find someone to do your gas work. Like some other professions, not many are picking it up as a job. At least trained/qualified people that is.

Scott,

Tell us more about your set-up.. Do you have a Pool with a Spa or just a Pool? Pentair has several versions of the EasyTouch, so it would be best to get the one that fits your needs.

What Pentair pump did you get? Is your pool a saltwater pool or were you planning on making it a saltwater pool?

You will need to add ScreenLogic2 in order to control your pool remotely.

With regards to your heater question... With ScreenLogic, you can sit inside and monitor your Pool/Spa status on your PC, tablet, or phone. You can turn your heater on or off and set the temperature you want all with a couple of icon clicks.

Thanks for posting and good luck with your upgrade.

Jim,
Who did your pool work?

Scott,

The pool at my house was built by Mid-City Custom Pools in Hurst TX. 817-65-7665.

It appears to me that they have a few fulltime employees, but sub everything but design and program management out.

I think they did a pretty good job, but that said, I would not go to a Pool Builder, and pay their markup, just to install a heater. I'd try to contact a sub directly.

My wife washed my phone and I lost all my contacts... sigh!! If you call them, ask for "Don't". His nickname is all I remember. "Don't" is one of the field guys and if you can get a hold of him, I suspect he will be able to put you in touch with someone that can help you out.

Thanks,

Jim R.

update - pool has completed. finally found a plumber to run our gas line. took a bit since we decided to not only re-run to my pool heater but take advantage of gas and run into the house so we could do a gas stove/oven. and run out the far end of house for a fireplace on shallow end of pool deck. i ended up going with a Pentair MasterTemp 400. hope that is a decent choice. fixing to pull the trigger on the pentair panel and screenlogic. just wanted to run these numbers back by to make sure i am not picking the wrong items. i am adding an actuator - need one for waterfall feature. we did a scupper so we just tied into main line. i may come to regret that but for now i will deal with it. at least i am getting rid of my Polaris (YEA!!!!) so i have room for a pump later on if i want separate that out.
Pentair 520540 EasyTouch 8 Pool/Spa Control System, Base System - No ICP, 2 Actuators

Pentair 522104 Screenlogic2 Interface & Wireless Connection Kit

Pentair 263045 180 Degree 3-Port Pool And Spa Valve Actuator

Scott,

Your P/N's look good to me..

I'm assuming you have both a Pool and Spa and will need two actuators to switch between the pool mode and spa mode, plus an extra one for your water feature..

Thanks,

Jim R.
