Pump not priming, no pressure to filter. Cannot reproduce pump leak

When you get this figured out you really need to replace those ball valves with Jandy valves this summer.. If you need to replace the valves now go ahead and get these...

Yes they are more expensive but they just do not fail and if they ever did you just rebuild them :)

You should be able to plug the returns so that you can open the ball valves without getting wet.
I was able to take the skimmer union off and peak inside. No matter if I have the valve open or closed it looks like this. I'm guessing when I open the valve there should be an opening in the middle of the ball for water to flow? It just trickles around the sides when it's opened.

Could running the pump like this when trying to prime it have damaged the pump? Enough to crack the pump or maybe just blow out an O-ring?

That's really odd. What is in the valve?

Are all of the valves like that?

You need to clear whatever the blockage is.

It might have damaged the pump, but you won't know until you can get the valves cleaned out and water can flow.

Did you disconnect the union at the pump?

See if water goes through the pipe section from the pump to the valves with a garden hose while the section is removed from the pump.

It's odd how it is flat like it is.

It looks like it was intentionally done.

Ask the people who closed the pool what it is.

It is hard and difficult to scratch or soft and easy to scratch?

It's very hard to scratch off. In February I had someone out to replace the ball valves. What it looks like to me is when they glued the PVC together some of that glue trickled down onto the top of the ball valve and essentially sealed it. Underneath the grey flaky stuff is a smooth white object that is rounded at the top. It's just hard to tell. I've called the company that replaced the valve and told them they need to come out here and fix this.

Is the main drain valve like that?
I'm guessing so but I can't get the main drain union off. I have 12 inch PVC pliers and they cannot get the main drain union off. It looks like glue from the PVC slid down the side and into the gap where the union is. I've tried knocking it a little with a hammer to see if I can loosen it but no luck. I would be shocked if it's not the same thing though since I can't get water to come out of either valve.

It's really strange. It's a lot more than just a drip.

Were the return valves replaced as well?

If you plug the returns at the pool, you should be able to open the return valve unions and see why you're not getting any water from them.
