Hello all,

The weather has been warm here so I decided to get a head start on pool opening. I was concerned about opening this year for two reasons. First, it's the spring after my first year closing the pool myself. Second, I stored the pump in the basement and it got pretty wet during a flood. Opening went well, but the pump motor does not sound great. It's been on my list of things to replace anyway, so I'm not super bummed about it and will probably just replace instead of trying to tuneup/repair. That said, like most folks right now, money is tight and who knows when things will go back to normal.

This will be our 5th summer in this house with the pool. The first two summers I ran the pump continuously because of suction side leaks that would make it hard for the pump to keep its prime when shutting off and restarting. I fixed that issue and started running the pump 8 hours a day, which saved on electricity, but I was still always nervous about the pump running dry and burning out, and I kind of like the idea of the water circulating a little more than that.

Current pump is a Hayward SuperPump with a 1hp Century motor. I'm leaning towards replacing just the motor, is there any good reason to replace the whole unit? Does 1hp at the high end sound right for my setup? I have a robot, so the pump is just for filtration/circulation. Would a 3/4 hp motor make more sense? I understand that if I change the motor size, I would need to change the impeller as well, but how does that work for 2 speed or variable speed pumps? Would the current impeller be okay for the lower speeds of those pumps?

Thanks in advance and I hope you're all staying safe and healthy.
