First thing to do is complete your signature, as much as you know, with the details of your pool. That helps all of us when we help you. See What we need to know to answer your questions
Post pics of your pool and equipment and valves and ask questions.
Allen already hit the obvious, but let me chime in: get a test kit. Now. And don't scrimp. My personal preference is a TF100 and a speedstir. With a couple extra stirbars so I can run all my tests before I have to wash dishes. You might as well get the XL option now, because you will be burning through a lot of reagent initially before the novelty of your Junior Scientist Playset wears off.
You're over a hundred bucks there, but it's an investment, not an expense. It will pay for itself over the course of a season in pool chemicals not purchased because you didn't set foot in the pool store. What's your copay for a trip to urgent care for a case of pinkeye or an ear infection? I'll bet it's close to that.
