Post Pool Use

Is there anything I need to do after our first pool use as far as chemicals go? My BIL says I should shock (slam) but I feel nothing needs to be done as long as everything is at the levels they should be.

Don't do a thing. Please read "The "ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry" up in Pool School. You will find BIL needs to CHILL

I wouldn’t go so far as to SLAM unless you have some kind of contamination. Just maintain normal levels and you’ll be fine.

You could raise it to the higher end of the standard range if you want

I've noticed my FC drops a ppm or two after people swim. Nasty, dirty people in my clean pool. So I generally add 1 to 2 ppm of chlorine (or have the swimmer add it) after swim time is done. That helps insure I never drop below minimum ppm.

It looks like u have a quite oversized swg - a couple swimmers are no match for it.
Follow Recommended Levels & FC/CYA Levelsall the time & there’s no need to raise to slam/shock level unless there’s a mishap of some type.
Routine “shocking” isn’t necessary in a properly maintained pool.

As an aside, TFP pool owners will often raise the FC up 2or 3 points IF they are expecting a heavy swimmer load. That way, the FC most always stays at normal levels the entire time

I would always have a gallon or two of chlorine around since you have kids. You never know what they *leave* behind while swimming if you know what I mean! LOL
