Hi. I'm super glad I found this site and am hoping to get some honest feedback and possibly some insight/guidance/direction. I live north of Dallas and just had my pool re-plastered after 10 years. I'm a single/older woman and I really don't have anyone I can ask to help me or to give me guidance :-( To be completely honest, I am not very "handy" and don't know a lot about pools or plaster but I know enough to recognize when something is wrong, although my PB keeps telling me that my expectations are too high or that I'm not being reasonable <---PSA NO woman in the history of the world has ever gotten more reasonable after being told that but I have honestly tried to be very respectful, calm, kind and patient.

My plaster was finished the second week in May so we are on WK 5. I chose Quartscapes Cappucinno because my old color was Mohave Desert and they discontinued and this was the closest color they had. I had REALLY loved the old pool finish, never had any issues and it was starting to show a bit of wear and tear so I wanted to refinish. The contractor I used was the original project manager from when had the pool built 10 years ago. He also runs a small pool maintenance service now and has also handled my weekly pool cleaning/upkeep for almost 10 years so it is someone I have not had a reason to distrust, however, he keeps telling me that this is normal and I'm starting to really worry.

I spent a LOT of money to have the pool replastered (also had the patio stripped and resealed at the same time). I have paid him in full....even when we had both discussed my concerns with the quality of the job when finished. I had explained that I could not "brush" that giant pool myself daily or multiple times a day and we discussed that I needed he and his crew to handle it even if it meant my paying them for their help. Its just too much for me physically. He agreed to handle. They did "something" to speed along the process which I believe involved dumping in several gallons of muriatic acid into the pool and brushing over the first week or two multiple times a day.

You have to look at the photos to understand my concerns and they don't do the best job showing the problem because the light from the sun reflects off of them but there are lines/streaks which are "new" meaning they are only there now after several weeks. They almost look like brush marks on a golf course in the sand trap.

Speaking of sand, there is so much dust piled up in the bottom of the pool that I can't imagine it ever going away. As of yesterday my PB still told me I can not use the polaris vacuum so I am not sure how all of this dust is ever going to go away but the bottom of my pool looks like an image of a lunar moon landing. What say you? Do these photos look like there is a major problem and is there any advice you guys can please offer?

When you are single and a bit older, its embarassing to feel so clueless and have to rely on the trustworthiness of a contractor and now the possible kindness of strangers :-( Thanks for any help you can offer. PS: Photos taken on different days this week and at different times. You have to enlarge the images to really see the "streaking/striping" I will leave a few more photos in the next post below.

Well hello there! I am so sorry to be meeting in this way :( Lets see what we can do to help you and your pool out.

did "something" to speed along the process which I believe involved dumping in several gallons of muriatic acid into the pool and brushing over the first week or two multiple times a day.
sounds like they did a "hot start" on your pool. This one of the harder ways to start up plaster but it is also one of the best ways to do so.

Have they balanced the water since doing this?
I can not use the polaris vacuum
Are you running your pump 24/7? If not you should be to help get the dirt/dust out of the pool. You can also use a manual vacuum with "brushes" on the bottom of it instead of wheels.

There is NOTHING to be embarrassed about when you don't know what you don't know. Instead you should be good about reaching out for help!!

The first thing you need to do is get your own test kit............say what?? They test my water for me.............yeah BUT look at the results. Something is going on with the water so we need to figure it out. I am hoping if we can get the water dialed in and the dust up and out of the pool your plaster may look a bit better.
Test Kits Compared

See what you can do to get them to vacuum your pool with a manual vacuum .

Hi KimKats!!!! Thank you so very much for responding so quickly. You are my hero!

They come weekly to service the pool and I am attaching an example of the last e-mail notification they sent (I have blocked out their name and contact info plus my address). Below is a photo of the pool, they take one each time they come so I know they were here, but as you can see....it doesn't show the bottom of the pool. They they told me they have come here with a vacuum twice and that this is just going to "Take Time" and that the appearance will change over time...but after 5 weeks and having it look like this....I'm worried hence my finding this page and seekin help.

Thank you for not making me feel silly because I really don't know anything about my own pool. I do not have a water test kit but just hopped on the TFP site and the ones you guys are recommending are out of stock? I'm happy to purchase one, but until they are back in stock is there another one you would recommend? Thursdays are the day they come and service the pool so I will also post a new report once I get one and then compare it with the test results I get with my own kit if I can figure it out. Check out the last test report they sent 6-15, not sure it has enough detail on it for you to help me but its all I have.

I just set my Aqualink to run the Filter Pump 24/7. Its only been running 12 hours a day. By the way, not sure if it matters but it's been about 100 degrees here for over a week and we have had a lot of rain and hail (crazy baseball sized hail) so that may also impact the balance of the pool water. Doesn't look like our temperatures are going to drop much till after september so the heat is something that is here to stay.

I just sent them a message asking them to vacuum the pool again when they come tomorrow. I'm not sure what kind of a manual vacuum to buy but I will get one if you think it will help. If nothing else I can use it to at least try to get the dust and "stuff" out of the pool. I'm not sure how long I'm supposed to refrain from using the polaris but it won't hurt to have a back up vacuum no matter what. Let me ask the pool service guys if they can at least show me how to hook it up and use one. I'm hoping it is as simple as screwing it into the wall where the polaris usually goes. :)

There is no reason you cannot be using your Polaris cleaner after 30 days of the plaster curing.

Why no wheeled cleaner for first 30 days?Plaster is sufficiently hard once the pool is full of water. Pool cleaners can be installed and utilized after about two days if there is no plaster dust forming. The reason that tracks develop is usually from plaster dust being "packed down" by the pool cleaner wheels and then not removed by brushing. So it can look like an "indention" (and discolored) but it is not an indention. Brushing afterwards can help prevent the plaster dust from sticking on the plaster.

Hi AJW. thank you for trying to help me. In your response it says "If there is no plaster dust forming". I have a ton of dust all over the bottom of the pool and coating the walls even after 5 weeks. If the vacuum runs all day long like it is supposed to, when would I brush "afterwards"? The pool/plaster man was pretty adamant about me not using the polaris. I'm afraid to do anything that doesn't follow his instructions because if this is all permanent I don't want him to blame me for causing something to go wrong on my not following his direction? Super stressed.

The vacuum does not need to run all day long. A few hours a day is sufficient. You need to give debris time to settle to be vacuumed up.

If you have plaster dust in the pool you have to keep brushing it daily.

What type of filter do you have?

When was the filter cleaned?

If you are not willing to take control of YOUR pool then you will be hostage to the Pool Company. I don’t know why you are worried about blame.

Thanks Kim. I placed an order and got a few additional recommended add-ons. Looks like some smart stir component of the kits are on back order but they will send when back in stock. I also ordered the recommended add-ons (Standard Sampler and the PH Meter) This is all going to be new territory for me, but at least I will become better educated so I can take better care of my pool and the significant investment it represents as well as be able to enjoy it 110%. I'll try anything to get rid of all of this plaster dust. :)

Hi. Thank you for your message. I'm 5 weeks out and if you read my original post, I am not physically able to brush the pool myself. The pool company knew this when accepting the job and agreed to have one of their pool cleaners come and handle it for me. I was more than happy to pay them extra to do so if necessary, but for the $12K+ they charged me to replaster plus the additional $12K to strip and reseal the patio and replace the mastic, I asked them to please include this service. They did come every day in the beginning but are not only coming once or twice a week and still have a ton of plaster dust in the pool and a LOT of lines that appeared several weeks after they re-plastered. They look like rake marks all over the bottom of the pool. My pool filter is a Jandy CV series. Not home so I can't look at the specific model at this moment. Filter was cleaned the day the start up after re-plastering was done. I am here because I am trying to take control of my pool by becoming better educated so I am not a hostage to the pool company going forward. As an older single woman this just has not been in my wheelhouse. I have a lot of competencies this just isn't one currently so I'm going to do all I can to become better educated so I don't have to rely on my pool company or the kindness of strangers. The only thing I'm worried about as it relates to blame is if I have to take legal action (which I honestly hope I don't) to ensure the pool plaster situation is improved to at least a reasonable level...I do not want the pool company to say that I did something to cause the streaking/stripe marks and lines all over the pool.

Here is a link to a great test kit:

I will circle back this afternoon when I have more time to address some of the concerns.

If your filter was only cleaned on the day of the startup it should be cleaned again given the amount of dust you are describing.

There is much that should be done and either you need to get your pool company to do it or find another Pool Service who can give your pool more attention. Weekly pool service is rarely adequate.

Lisa, are there any highschool kids in your area? They might want to make a few bucks vacuuming your pool and brushing it.

Manuel vacuum= Vacuum head with "brushes" on the bottom, hose that will go from your skimmer to each end of the pool, pole to attach to the vacuum head. I will post links so show you want head looks like:

Great job getting the test kit on the way. I have a link for you to help with doing the testing. I will warn you to NOT have anything in your mouth when you read it though LOL:

Kim: Good suggestion on the high school kids. I have one that I think is up to the task and a good/responsible kid. I'm going to reach out to him. I have one question before I order the vacuum head. How do I know if my skimmer has a 1.25"or 1.5" hole that the hose will fit into? I can buy the head (thanks for the link) but I'm not sure which sized hose to get?

Thanks for the link to the test kit guidance. I needed a good laugh. My pool guy finally called me back today and since he is not very adept at hiding how annoyed he is with me, I was really feeling quite down in the dumps. He is trying to tell me that he can't see the stripes that look like rake marks in the sand all over the pool, although he does admit that there is a lot of plaster dust. Thank you so much for your patience and your help. I REALLY appreciate it!!!

I have asked him to please check to see if the filter needs to be cleaned. They were here today while I was at work and I can't even tell the difference from when I left this morning. I sent a text to him after reading your comment about the filter possibly needing to be cleaned and asked if they can come tomorrow to check and take care of it if needed. I've also already started asking friends/neighbors who services/works on their pools and I'm going to hop on the phone tomorrow and try to find someone to come out and at least tell me what they think is needed and then fix it if they can. Thanks.

Take a tape measure out to the pool OR a piece of string and mark on the sting how wide the opening is in your skimmer. Lay the string on a ruler to see how wide your opening is.

You could also go to Lowes or Walmart and buy both sizes and see which one fits and return the other one.

Don't forget the pole to attach to the head.

He is trying to tell me that he can't see the stripes that look like rake marks in the sand all over the pool,
sigh...........of course he is saying that.........he does not want to admit there is anything wrong as he will be on the hook to fix it gurrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Vacuum head brush ordered (With no wheels and viny bristles), two sizes of hoses (I can return the one that doesn't fit) and a second pole just in case I need one. Thank you!
