Are all 2” rubber gaskets universal? I got one from my local Leslies and it was made for Hayward. They did not have one
specific for my model. I have yet to open the multivalve and look since it’s been
super hot.
The Hayward won't fit a Pentair multiport.
I think that the 1.5" models are interchangeable but not the 2" models.

I ran across a 2” Pentair valve knocked down to 1.5” the other day. The bulkheads were not modified & fit are the same spread on the Pentair tank.
I'm referring to the spider gasket for a 2" Hayward vs a spider gasket for a 2" Pentair. I don't think that they are interchangeable.
Your right. I’m looking at them now, hanging of cage in my service van. They are tapered & spaces differently.
Personally I don’t rebuild valves, just swap entire units.

Do I need to release presssure from the sand filter before opening up the Multiport valve?
Since your system is below the pool, you need to close all of the valves going to the system and then open the air bleed valve on top of the filter.
