Pool cover

I drained my pool last year, around 4 to 5 inches below return hole. When I uncovered the pool this year it was 8 inches below, the level I left it. This was the first year I used a new cover that you spring load to the deck. It allows water to pass through it. I figured I would have more water in the pool do to rain and snow accumulation, but this was definitely not the case.

Is it possible that this black cover with its water through design, caused the water to evaporate, to the tune of eight inches. Other years I used a cheap cover with no water through ability, and never lost a drop.
